I don't have enough points…

I don't have enough points to make a new post, but I wanted to discuss an interesting game theory aspect of Penn State's final possession in regulation. We all agree that the correct decision for Penn State was not to score when up 21-20, and instead take the knee to run out the clock.

However, given that they did score the TD to go up 27-20, should they have gone for the 2-pt conversion (e.g. 29-20) instead of kicking the extra point (e.g. 28-20), with 2 minutes left in regulation? I think they should have gone for 2.

To prove it to myself, I listed every possible scenario and assigned probabilities. I concluded that if Penn State has a 48%+ chance of converting 2-pts, then they increase their chance of winning by attempting the 2-pts. If you succeed, the game is over. If you fail the 2-pt conversation, Indy must score a TD and then either 1) plays it safe and successfully kick the 1-pt to force overtime or 2) plays is risky and successfully covert the 2-pt to win outright. Psychology aside, I think the logical approach is to go for 2.

I'm generally less inclined to go for two, but I think it makes sense in this particular end of game situation. What do you think is the correct game theory decision?

2017 was a critically important season for the Michigan football. Our Championship in 2018 would not be possible without the learning and growth from 2017.

Math 396 - Honors Analysis II with Brian Conrad

The 4th and last course in the honors calc series. I was in Prof. Conrad's last course before he moved to Stanford. Only 10 people made it through to the 4 classes from an initial group of 50.

I remember spending more time on this class than all my other classes combined, and it was still over my head. The lowest grade they gave out was a A-, which was nice.
