They seem to always be the underdogs, even in their own state; as a native Minnesotan, it drives me nuts seeing how many Badger fans there are in the Twin Cities.
Not that I think being ranked is a bad thing, but in Michigan's case, the preseason ranking of the football team has certainly not resulted in "undisputed glory", for the most part, over the past several years.
I think it's favorable to be unranked and "fly under the radar" a bit more. Though, I'm not sure how much of that is possible, given the media's infatuation with everything Harbaugh.
It's for the very reason that football has been so far from its goal that I would be much more ecstatic were the team to win a national championship. That is not to say that I wouldn't be overjoyed if basketball won, but football holds much more weight in this case.
