With freshmen ineligble to play that year i got to know a lot of the guys on the footlball team, a few backetball players and my fraternity had a few other atheletes, wrestlers, swimmers, baseball..... My favorite story is about 2 guys on the football team i met as a freshmen and got to know quite well, Steve Nauta and Walt Downing. both were from Pennsylvania and good guys. We partied a lot that year. One weekend they were hosts for some new recruits, Gene Johnson and Rick Leach. they got back from their parties about the same time i did and we met up in their room for some more beers. After a short while Gene and Rick had to go down the hall to the bathroom (gotta love these dorms) . I asked Walt and Steve what they thought of these guys. After some debate they agreed that the tight end was pretty good but they werent too sure about the QB. Needless to say Walt and Steve spent the next four years snapping to that QB while the TE didnt see much of the field I have few "G rated" stories but one maybe "PG rated" is wourth telling. For this one i will leave the players names out. That year the Village Bell offered free beer to football players if they had a shutout that day. Since the freshman were ineligble to play a few of us watched thegame at the dorm and saw them beat Minnesota 49-0. Off to VBell for some dinner and drinks. We had a lot to drink. Walking back to WQ late at night nature called. unfortunatley we werent near anywhere that was open that had a bathroom. just as they finished doing their duty ,where they shouldnt have, a cop pulled up. He called us over, looked us over and asked if they (neglecting me - thank God) played for Bo. wow - did they squirm; finally admitting that they did. the cop ask if they would like him to tell Bo what they were doing. I thought they were going to lose it. you could see the emotions in their face. Lose scholarship, run the stadium, have Bo scream at them. no sir, yes sir, whatever you say sir but please, please, please dont tell Bo. The cop made them grovel for quite awhile clearly enjoying the moment i wanted to slink away but knowing that i was not the target and therefore safe also enjoyed watching this Eventually, he let them off with a warning and the expected "if i see you doing this again i will tell Bo" Needless to say - these guys feared Bo more than anything
One final story and back to Walt and Steve, who i knew best. Without knowing about all the recruiting stuff that goes today on i asked them what it was like being recruited. they were both recruited nationally and had been on a lot of recruiting visits. They told me of the excesses that schools would offer. The schools that impressed them the most were the schools that didnt offer anything other than what the NCAA allowed. There were only 3 OSU, ND and Michigan that they had both visited and didnt cheat. One had been to PSU and they too didnt cheat. Based on their stores i can understand the lure of the some of our southern competitors who seem to still employ the same tactics today.. |
| 2 years 15 weeks ago | Grad Fluid Dynamics |
Second term junior i did well in ME fluids then decided to take the grad level course my first term senior year. Same prof but it didnt take long to realize he didnt like underclassmen in his grad classes. i worked my ass off then on the final - 4 questions. I couldnt answer one! After 5 or so minutes he asked the class if anyone wanted a C+ they could turn their papers in now. the other 3 under classmen did. -- smart move. prof left the room for about 10 minutes then came back and asked if anyone wanted a C I went for it 30 years later i still think about that final - DAMN that man!!! |
| 2 years 15 weeks ago | A bit older than most but Prof Chase |
He taught automatic controls (I think this was ME 461) and then i took a grad class from him on vibration that was out of this world hard i was working full time at ford and taking a full load at M and begged him to help me in his free time since i was working too much. he really helped me out He was a bit strange. a true nerd; totally dedicated to his passion. He started a simulation software company whose name i have forgotten but at the time they were really world class I did an engineering law project on his simulation of a train crash - really cool - well before all this solid modeling stuff now |
