Ohtani's contract was one of the strangest in history. He made it out to be about the team winning now.  Given the inconsistent story about the gambling debt, it seems to me most likely it's his and not his translators.  Thinking about the contract, Ohtani knows he is a compulsive gambler and he's piss away tons of the money if he gets it now. So, he strings it out well past his playing days in the hopes he would overcome this issue, especially once the stress of his playing days was over.

The fundamental problem is that John Thompson Jr. retains complete control over the basketball program at G'town. Perhaps fair enough - he's the one who put G'town on the map so perhaps it's only fair to let him run it into the ground.

If you disregard the fluke that was the Iverson years, his last decade as head coach was relative mediocrity. In effect, made it irrelevant past the first weekend in March already before turning it over mid-season to his long-time assistant Craig Esherick. The downward sprial continued and then Thompson turned to his son, JTIII. He had some success with a modified form of the Princeton offense initially, but was too stubborn to adjust to changes in the game and finally ran the program into the ground entirely. The administration supposedly ran an open coaching search but every talented coach wanted to know if Thompson Jr. would still actually run the program, attend every practice, and functionally be the actual decision-maker.  When they learned they would have to share coaching duties with Thompson, no candidates would come and G'town turned to Ewing who was willing to accept this arrangement. Ewing was a reasonable assistant NBA coach, but had no college experience.  He recruited some decent players, but he and the athletic dept handled the disciplinary issues very poorly last fall and lost the team for the year.  Ewing isn't going to turn it around now given how bad the team will whenever they suit up again, so his tenure is functionally over.

The real question for G'town is what to do with Thompson. As long as the program is under his command, they can't get a strong coach.  Who would want to come if they can't run their own system? Thompson sees it as his God-given right to run G'town and the administration cowers to him. G'town is a lost hope until Thompson gives up running the show, so a lot rides on how he decides to cut Ewing loose and whether he demands to determine who the next coach is so he can run the program. I'd be shocked if Thompson ever gives up control of the program willingly or if the administration ever stands up to him.  Assuming that's the case, nothing will change and G'town will remain in the wilderness for some time.

My advice for Dubai is to get a short connection so you don’t have to leave the airport. Or even better yet, book a different layover.
