Well with the season over, I've been going through all the stats through every sport.

Zavier Simpson is the B1G Assist Champion.

Both overall and in conference games only.

All games

  1. Zavier Simpson (U-M), 236 in 30 games (7.9 APG)
  2. Marcus Carr (MIN), 207 in 31 games (6.7 APG)
  3. Cam Mack (NEB), 179 in 28 games (6.4 APG)
  4. Cassius Winston (MSU), 176 in 30 games (5.9 APG)
  5. Anthony Cowan (MD), 147 in 31 games (4.7 APG)

B1G games only

  1. Zavier Simpson (U-M), 135 in 19 games (7.1 APG)
  2. Cam Mack (NEB), 116 in 17 games (6.8 APG)
  3. Marcus Carr (MIN), 130 in 20 games (6.5 APG)
  4. Cassius Winston (MSU), 116 in 20 games (5.8 APG)
  5. Anthony Cowan (MD), 102 in 20 games (5.1 APG)

Zavier Simpson is also the new Michigan single season record holder for Assists Per Game. His 7.9 per game bests Gary Grant's 6.9 which was set in 1987-88.

In addition to that, Zavier now holds the Michigan SENIOR record for assists with 236, besting Gary Grant's total of 234 back in 1987-88.

I will definitely miss this dude for everything he did for the program. He was a bulldog and led them to a great amount of success.

BUT, I just wish, from the bottom of my heart, he figured out how to shoot. In sports, there are a few things that can absolutely be fixed, and one of them is shooting percentage and form. I am not sure what the block was that prevented him from being a good shooter, but he could have been an all-timer in ALL of B10 history if that part of his game improved.

Otherwise, I think he'll do just fine over in Europe and be able to make a great living.

Look , I know what you mean about his shooting -but- this year he shot .519 from 2 and .360 from 3. That is actually very solid. Granted his FT shooting was not good: .574 but his shooting from the floor was good enough given his assist rate for this team to thrive.

I decided to look up their totals.  I don't remember Grant at Michigan but I vaguely remember his NBA career.  Great college player.

  • Grant = 731 assists in 129 games (128 started)
  • Simpson = 667 assists in 146 games (96 started)

Grant's dominant freshman year where he started all but one game is the difference.  It would have been close-ish if Simpson was able to make a run in these tournaments.

Somewhat surprisingly, the B10 assist leaders all time don't even sniff the top of the national leader board.  Winston's 890 lead the all time B10 and that's only good for 16th and is nearly 200 behind Bobby Hurley's record of 1076.

Also worth noting, he was #3 in the NATION in assists/game (the top-2 averaged 8.0 compared to Zavier’s 7.9), and was far and away tops amongst all major conference players (more than a whole assist/game higher than anyone else not in a mid-major conference).

I’m disappointed he won’t have a shot at 500 rebounds. He needed like 4-6 more games to get it. Was definitely within reach to finish a career at 1000/500/500.
