WTKA Airing 1978 Michigan vs Wisconsin Bob Ufer Broadcast Saturday 10/24/15

Submitted by M Gulo Gulo on

As we have a bye week, WTKA is still airing a Meechigan football game. A classic broadcast from the one and only, late great Bob Ufer. The 1978 Meeshigan vs. Wisconsin game at Camp Randall that the wolverines won 42-0.

I was helping my Dad clean out his basement a few weeks ago and found about 12 old reel-to-reels that he had recorded entire games that Ufer had called on the radio (commercials and all) from the late 70's.

Anyone have any idea how much it would be to get these converted into media that's a little more modern? I'd love to share these if I'm able to do so- I just need to find someone a little more technologically savvy than I.

I was the one who provided the 1978 Michigan-Wisconsin Game that is going to be re-broadcast on WTKA this Saturday. I have been getting these old reel-to-reel games transferred to a digital format for years. I would very much be willing to help you get these transferred if you'd like. You can contact me by visiting my Dr. Sap YouTube Channel via this link: Dr. Sap  From there you can contact me by clicking on the "About" tab and click on the "View email address" button. Thanks and GO BLUE!!

Ill be listening as I take advantage of the off week and get the yard ready for winter.

I remember as a young man turning the sound on the TV down so we could listen to Ufer call the game.

Ufer was the main reason I went to UM. I figured anyone who was THAT enthusiastic about a great institution had to have good reason to love it. Decades later I'd say ole Ufer was right. GO BLUE!

I was lucky enough to be an undergrad in some of the last years of Bob Ufer's career.  I still remember going to a pep rally at the mud bowl location on South U in 1979 the night before the OSU game at which Bob Ufer was one of the speakers.  He delivered an epic pep talk speech that got everyone there hugely fired up.   It was just unreal how, with no notes, he could just rattle off details of play after play from past Michigan games.  He did the whole talk from his heart and with a passion for Michigan unknown to mankind.

at that MudBowl, too. We had heard about it from a friend who was a U of M law student, came into Ann Arbor from WMU early that afternoon for the weekend. As the crowd anxiously awaited Ufer, my buddy Rick started the chant , "UFER! UFER! UFER!" and soon the crowd was in a frenzy. Good times!!!

This 1978 game was interesting in that Michigan was coming off a home loss to Michigan State 15-24 in Ann Arbor.

Wolverines came in ranked 9th, and blasted the Badgers on their way to 6 straight wins and 10-1 record and BIG title.

Badgers finished 5-4-2 under first year HC Dave McClain (Brady Hoke's former HC at Ball State). McClain replaced John Jardine (37-37-3). Dave McClain was a good friend of Bo Schembechler. I understand they genuinely liked and admired each other.

Badgers tied with Illinois and Purdue that year. The 5-4-2 record in 1978 was the first +.500 year for the Badgers since 1974 (7-4 record, but no bowl).

Wisconsin's stars in this game were few: TB Ira Mathews, CB Larry Johnson, DB George Welch

Wisconsin 21, No. 1 ranked Michigan 14
