What if Tate has a great offseason?

Submitted by NorthwesternFan on

I know Denard had an AMAZING season, I don't want anyone to interpret this post as anti-Denard, but honestly, Tate looked pretty good when he saw the field (Illinois game anyone?)  What happens if Tate has an amazing offseason? Could we have some QB competition in camp next year?

I heard that they were going to move Denard to CB and Tate to LB because Devin was going to have a really really good offseason.. Shore up the defense with more offense, (on defense)

I also heard that they were going to start using Tate and Denard on the field at the same time. It's going to be super sweet, they will probably bust it out for the O$U game for sure.

think tate will transfer at the end of the season.1,Denard is a Qb and a good one at that.2,Devin will have the 2nd spot locked up.But if tate wants to stay then thats fine to.GO BLUE

I gave Tate a little bit of  underserved flack because I was naive enough to buy into the Melanie Collins rumor about him leaving. I said something along the lines that "I wouldn't be surprised if he left".

I gained a ton of respect for Tate for sticking it out this year. Enough to even cuss out the guy sitting behind me after he booed Tate when he fumbled againt Illinois. I am no "Michiagn Man", but if I was to try to pin-point examples of "Michigan Men", I would point directly to him, among the rest of the current players and coaches.

it won't change his great accuracy and amazing ability to scrable and make great plays during improbable combacks.

...or his penchant for missig check-downs for a first down and instead try to squeeze throws downfield into double coverage, that 50% of the time I just close my eyes and pray for no int.

...or his un-fixable habit of holding the ball outside his body while he tries to run away from angry D linemen....that often times becomes a fun game of Happy Turf-Ball Challenge.

I'm surprised this hasn't already been posted, but we really need Tate. There is a high, high possibility that Denard gets seriously injured. It is not at all far-fetched for Denard to lead us to 4 - 5 wins, have an injury taking him out for the balance of the season, at which point Tate starts the remaining 6 - 7 games. Unless Denard seriously changes the way he plays, he is going to get killed. We can't presume he will stay healthy all season. I can easily see Tate gambling that even if he doesn't start right away, there's a good probability he will start eventually. That is worth sticking around for.

The greatest improvement Tate made this season--and it was quite significant--was his attitude.  Tate's one of my favorite players on the team and I was absolutely heartbroken after the way he acted during/after the UCONN game.  He's come a long way and appears as though he's done a lot of growing up this season.  While Tate still appears to still have lategame heroics-moxy, we have our 1-a in D-Rob.  I've heard from people close to the team that Denard is the "heart" of the team--he's absolutely as nice as he comes off on television, tries to get his teammates into church and is a constant supportive, encouraging voice for his teammates. Denard Robinson is an incredible athlete and has the potential to become the best quarterback in college football if he isn't already, but I think his attitude and presence on the team is what confirms his starting-QB job here at Michigan.

Hard thing to see is the future.  Fuzzy and always changing it is.  Never know what might happen.  Note that Tate had some opportunities this year to play, and if he improves the things he needs to improve, sure he will get more opportunities to play next year.

I agree that it would be difficult for Tate to unseat Denard as the starter, but I think that if he can progress to the point where he is the better option at the position, then he should start. To be honest, all iI care about is wins, and I think the qb competition pushed both Tate and Denard to be better over the course of the year. Therefore I definitely think it's a mistake to write Tate off this offseason (or Gardner for that matter). Seems highly unlikely though given how great Denard was this year.
