You need two points because it always seems someone -1's you either way.
I think the points within the post that gets voted on only register as a +1....but when somebody does vote you up, your overall points, below your avatar and joined date actually goes up by 2.
I have no idea if I made any sense with that explanation, but I am pretty sure that's what is going on.
So, if a comment of your has 3 points, then your total MGoPoints goes up 6.
Also you get two points for starting a topic on the board.

The only competition that really matters is what goes down on the field/court/ice/pool etc involving University of Michigan student/athletes.
