WBB vs Oakland game notes

Submitted by jplwhite on November 15th, 2023 at 6:53 AM

Opponent: Oakland

Date:  11/14, Home, W 80-39

Starters: Laila Phelia, Jordan Hobbs, Cameron Williams, Lauren Hansen, Taylor Williams

Injuries/inactives: Elise Stuck was in a walking boot on her right foot

Offense:

  • Taylor Williams had a couple coast to coast plays, which are quickly becoming a signature
    • One ended with a layoff to Cam for the score
    • One started with a steal and ended with an impressive spin move into a layup
  • Sollom had a nice play after missing a layup where she stayed high, got her own rebound and put it back for the score
  • Oakland’s defense played with busy hands leading to some steals and jump balls

Defense:

  • Hobbs had a nice steal that she took to the rack and got fouled. Part of 7 steals and 7 blocks for the team.
  • The 1-2-2 press only came out one time, Oakland broke it, and Michigan put it back on the shelf
  • Phelia had 2 impressive blocks by staying in front of her person and keeping her hands active. The box score says she had a third that I missed
  • Oakland only got above 10 points with 3:18 left in second quarter

Notable stats:

  • Cam Williams was dominant down low because of her size and ability to stay on the court this year. Finished with her first double double of the season: 12 points, 12 rebounds
  • The team finished with 13 turnovers, but caused 21 from Oakland

Overall:

  • I think this game really showed the size advantage Michigan had over an overmatched Oakland team as well as the depth of this team all around. 12 Wolverines saw the floor and 11 of them scored 4 points or more. The lone exception being Macy Brown who went 0 for 2 on three point shots.
  • My wife was unable to come to this game with me and when I got home she looked at the box score (10 points on 5-12 shooting) and said “What happened to Laila tonight?” I’ll give the same answer here, which is I think Phelia played fine, but this was a blowout from start to finish, so she didn’t play her usual minutes and everybody was scoring tonight, so the impetus was not there for her to be the top dog. If we can see this type of depth as we get further into the season, this will be a dangerous team.

Miscellaneous:

  • It felt like there were a lot of fouls called, some of them obvious and some a bit soft, but it felt like they were called evenly. 17 fouls for Michigan, 20 for Oakland.
  • Chyra Evans made her season debut with 2:18 left in the first quarter. She played 12 minutes throughout the game and finished 4-7 from the field with 8 points and 5 rebounds.
  • Elissa Brett made her Michigan debut at the start of the second quarter. She played 10 minutes, most/all in the second quarter and finished 2-2 from the field with 5 points and 2 fouls.
  • Michigan ran out the “all transfers” lineup for a couple minutes in the second quarter with Brett, Taylor Williams, and Hansen on the floor alongside Phelia and Cam Williams. Nothing significant happened, but it was fun to see.

Solid win for the ladies! Saw a lot of it, but haven't gotten to go back and watch the whole thing yet. Thanks as always for posting this!

It was great to see Chyra Evans and Elissa Brett play. I continue to believe that Evans is going to be really good. I did notice that she had a folded towel (maybe with ice in it) on her left leg whenever she was on the bench, though. Any idea if that's related to whatever kept her out of the first two games?

On the flip side, bummer that Elise Stuck was in a boot. :(

It feels to me like there is a growing amount of data that Whitney Sollom is going to be a very solid passer out of the post. She has a little bit of Hunter Dickinson's ability to see over the defense and find someone with a very good pass. Her rebounding is encouraging as well. As you mentioned, she had a great look that didn't fall, but she stuck with it and put it right back up for an easy bucket.

I still have no idea how the minutes are going to shake out. There is currently one great player and then a lot of good players. It seems the starters are pretty well set. I expect that Cam Williams will continue to be one of the first people subbed, so a post backup will get in first. And Macy Brown will come off the bench as the backup PG to be the 7th or 8th. Alyssa Crockett has been like the 10th person to get in this year, but she played plenty of meaningful minutes last year and showed again last night that she's no slouch.

I seriously wonder if KBA rolls close to 12 deep every game. I just don't see anyone yet on the sideline who doesn't bring something to the table and deserve minutes most nights.

As is anyone who wants to ask KBA the simple question of if Katy Eidle is ok/why she is no longer on the roster. I understand the answer is likely a non answer, but someone please ask the question. Could you imagine the men's team not having George Washington on the team and nobody asked about it?

at last night's pregame 'chalk talk' (btw - hiighly recommended, if you're a season ticket holder) KBA mentioned that evans and brett both had some minor knee stuff but were back at full strength.  she also said "someone else is sitting out tonight," but was, as per usual, not specific about who or what.   the walking boot on elise was not a welcome sight.

Can they break OSU’s full court press after a made basket? (This still haunts me from last year’s team. Every game had me thinking “We can beat this team” until the second quarter at home against the Bucks).

Oakland didn't really try to press, but both the exhibition and opener opponents did. Michigan looked like they could handle it sometimes, so they've definitely been practicing it, but we'll see if that translates to the higher level of competition against OSU's press. Jury is still out in my book.

i do think we have a couple more-conventional point guards (hanson and brown, certainly, possibly brett?), so i’m hoping that helps. competition caveats apply, of course - ohio state’s press is another thing entirely - and i’m loath to rely on a freshman macy brown, but i do think we’re a bit better-equipped than we were last season
