WAY OT: Suits for wedding

Submitted by WolverineNick on
Hey everyone, I am getting married this fall and was wondering what the best option is for groomsmen suits, buying or renting? I remember at one point on the board someone had posted that a Michigan grad had a startup that specialized in suits to buy for wedding parties. Is anyone aware of this and what did you do. Thanks!

I second the tie bar comment. buy matching ties for your groomsmen, that's pretty awesome.

Renting tuxes is a straight up waste of money. The online custom suit stores are usually really good. Just bought one from indochino, $250 with a coupon. I think they're usually on sale for $300.

I'm not sure what tuxes rent for these days, the prices I'm seeing here seem awfully high compared to what my groomsmen paid 13 years ago. But it was a long time, so my memory may be fuzzy.

Asking guys to spend a lot of money to buy a suit is tough, but if it's the same price as a tux rental it's not a bad idea if it's a usable suit. I think all of this is a lot of expense, though. I was in a friend's wedding a few years ago in A2 that was plenty nice, and he simply asked guys to wear a black suit (many have them, and those that don't can use it so it's not a bad purchase) and gave us matching ties. It looked great and it fit with our needs.

I'm a bit of a critic of the expensive wedding trends of the current day, though, so I'm naturally sympathetic to that. It won't matter how detailed, how well planned, and how good-looking it was 10 and 20 and 30 years from now.

But to each their own.

I have a very good dark blue suit and like you wear it maybe once a year. My family, aunts and uncles, are getting very old. There are a lot of them, late 70's-mid 80's. I fear I'm going to get to much use soon.

I used a new business called snapsuits.com on recommendation from a coworker and was surprisingly impressed. Started by Michiganders. Affordable custom suits. They also coordinate a lot of the groomsmen stuff for you. Check it out.

I got married last fall and went with blue suits over tux rental. My groomsmen really appreciated it since they didn't have that color suit already and they got to keep it. I coordinated all of the purchasing and had my groomsmen pay me back. Was able to get suit, shoes, belts, and ties all for about $200 which is how much rental would have cost. Macy's had some crazy deals online around this time last year. Shoes and belts were 50% off and suits were $115 (regularly around $400). The only thing is that ordering standard suits online aren't customizable to the different shapes/sizes of your wedding party. Myself and the rest of my wedding party all had a similar physique so it worked well for us. If you have a guy that's a foot shorter and weighs 100 pounds more than everyone else it probably won't work for you.

Just get everyone in the party a nice suit to wear. You can get nice one for the same price you'd pay to rent. That would also be your gift to them. Makes things so much easier and everyone will have a nice suit to wear whenever. Plus rentals look like crap. Half the people are swimming in their tux's

We rented and looking back I wish we would have bought suits. At the time I thought it made sense, but after buying a few suits for the same price of renting, it was dumb.
