W Tennis wins B1G Championship, 7th in last 8 years

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

After the 7 year long streak ended last season when Michigan dropped a match on the second to last day of the regular season to Northwestern, the Wolverines would face another scenario identical to last year.

9-0 in the B1G, tied for 1st with OSU (who Michigan did not face in the B1G season for the second straight year) and Northwestern looming.

On senior day this past Friday at the Varsity Tennis Center, Michigan took down the 3rd place Wildcats, 4-2.

Meaning all it took was a win over an overmatched Illinois team today to win the B1G. Michigan easily did so.

Michigan went up 1-0 when they took the doubles point by wins from the teams of #9 Kate Fahey & Alex Najarian and Bri Minor & Chaira Lommer.

The Wolverines stormed through singles competition, only losing one set all day.

Wins by Chiara Lommer (6-2, 6-0), Kate Fahey (6-1, 6-2) and the match-clincher by Bri Minor (6-3, 6-2) gave Michigan their 7th B1G Championship in the last 8 years.

Michigan and OSU tie for the B1G Championship, both with 11-0 records.

Michigan is now 19-4 and will be the 2 seed in the B1G Tournament which will be at the same court Michigan played at today in Champaign.

Michigan will be the 2 seed in the tournament.

Here are the results from this year's B1G slate-

Date Opponent Result
3/18 vs Michigan State W 4-0
3/25 at Indiana W 4-0
3/26 at Purdue W 5-2
3/31 vs Wisconsin W 4-0
4/2 vs Minnesota W 6-1
4/7 at Rutgers W 6-1
4/9 at Maryland W 4-1
4/15 vs Iowa W 4-3
4/16 vs Nebraska W 7-0
4/21 vs Northwestern W 4-2
4/23 at Illinois W 4-0

WD, thanks for the update.  Couple of questions - a) do they not always have 8 flights (4 singles & 4 doubles), and b) seems silly that they don't play all 13 other teams in the B1G every year, do you know why?

In Division 1 tennis, singles flights count as 1 point each, doubles counts as 1 point total (you need to win 2 of the 3 doubles flights to be awarded that 1 point). So the max total a team could achieve is 7 points. A lot of times, teams will not finish matches when one of the two teams reaches 4 total match points, which is why you can get match scores like 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, etc. That looks to be the case in some of the conference matches.

I don't know how they decide which to do, but either (a) they play out all 7 points, or (b) they stop once a team hits 4 points.  Sometimes (a), sometimes (b).  You can see, though, in the scores, that either a team plays all 7 points or the match is stopped once it is decided.

Back in the old days, they were best-of-9, with 6 singles points and 3 doubles points, but for some reason they decided to make the doubles matches worth a single point instead.

All tournaments stop after a team gets 4 points. Dual meets stop after a team gets 4 points unless both coaches agree to finish all matches. Sort of depends on their travel schedules, The current scoring system has been around at least 20 years except a couple of years ago they went to no ad scoring. So if a game gets to 40-40 the next point wins.

Three doubles teams from each school play a one set match and the team that wins 2 out of 3 three gets one point.  The other 6 points are one for each of the singles matches.

The good thing is OSU loses three in their starting lineup and I'm hoping DiLorenzo, their #1 and #1 in the country, turns pro for a fouth. We have our whole singles lineup back and Isabella Lorenzini will be joining the team next year and will likely knock someone out.

Appreciate the original post and multiple knowledgeable posters providing more information. I'm mystified as to why anyone here received any dowmbotes.
