UM Renovation Project

FWIW - Saw this at another site, comparing the UM Stadium reno to the remaking of the team. Last year, people saw the skeleton get put up (although there was also a lot of infrastructure work being done). Clearly the new and improved was not ready for use, but you could at least see that progress had been made. This year, from the outside, the suites appear to have moved along fairly well and lots of folks are questioning why it takes so long to complete the project - why is it not complete - we do not see much else being done on the outside? I.e, where is the progress. But what those folks forget is that there is a lot of work still being done on the inside, finishes, interior work, wiring, etc. You cannot have a finished product with just the exterior work. There is a lot of detail to get a project finished and trying to get those last details done takes a lot of coordination and push because the owners get anxious. The interior work is just as important. You also need to make sure that you have timely delivery on the highly rated materials demanded by the owners, cause just not any material will do at Michigan. And finally, one will note the obvious holdover that is impacting the renovation - which is the old pressbox. That pressbox needs to be here for this season, but will be removed after it is. Once that holdover is out, it will allow for the renovation to be complete. But getting the old pressbox out is not going to be an easy job and there will be challenges... Bottom line, this team, like the stadium renovations, is not a one and done job. There are many things that need completing. Hopefully, the conclusion for the stadium will bring the on the field progress we all so desire.

yesterday. During a timeout in the first half I looked across the field at the old press box and the new structure and wondered if or why they are not working on the inside of the new boxes on that side during the season. (I remember reading that all construction is on hold during the season) Of course it is impossible to tell from the 33rd row on the visitor's sideline what is/has being/been done on the inside. The stadium is a work in progress, much like the team. The main difference is the emotional factor in a team. Setbacks or delays in construction are purely a time factor. Setbacks, like injuries or "parts not ready or unavailable" like players or talent for schemes make a team a much more difficult project to complete. Also, the hopes and dreams for this team of 110,000+ on Saturday and millions of others watching on TV rise and fall with each little setback. With the construction delays...not so much.

I did a tour of the suites and club seating areas last week. They had one suite finished out for viewers to see. There was a lot of finishing out work that needs to be done throughout the new luxury boxes. Seats are not in place yet for the club seating area. I remember reading some time ago that they are working M-F on the projects using friday of homes games to clean up the site and get it ready for fans. The club seats are close to sold out. As of last week there were 57 suites sold out of 82. Interestingly, less than a dozen are corporate.

I do believe Brian's made the same point, just with not so much detail. I just hope it's right. I can't help feeling there's more work to be done on the on-field product than on the stadium itself. And of course, the metaphor would be a little better if every week, someone went inside and vandalized the place. Nobody's actively trying to tear down the suites.
