UM Drum Line?

Submitted by BlueDrew on

I am hoping someone can help me out here...

I am heading down to the game this weekend with my wife, and last time I brought her we came across the UM drum line standing on the steps of a building doing a routine.  Following the routine, they marched to the Stadium.

She would really like to see that again, but I cannot remember for the life of me where that building is. (or the name for that matter)

Can anyone help me out?  Thanks in advance!

I always come across this youtube vid of the pregame band performance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=os-0UhucJc8

I haven't seen one of these performances in person yet though, but I want to eventually. When you're a student, mostly everyone you tailgate with and have pregame festivities with just wants to play BP, drink, or be frattastic on State St or the SAE lawn, so no one ever wants to go see these pregame traditions.

I checked out the video on Youtube; it has changed since I was last there many years ago.  I only recall the band coming out of Revelle (not sure of the spelling), lining up on Hoover, starting the drums, and then proceeding to march to the stadium chanting.  I assume that [hopefully] hasn't changed.

kgh - I wish I knew about it sooner; I didn't go see it until I was in grad school.  It really fires you up - the walk from Revelle to the stadium gates seems to last about 2 minutes.  It really is college football pagentry at its best.

Under the Carr regime, the band would start lining up 90-120 minutes before kickoff.  But RR is changing the process, where the band is now leading the players on a walk from some location near the stadium to the gates of the stadium.  I don't know how this will affect their marching to the stadium.

I'm in the MMB and can answer some of your questions.

Yes RR is having the band lead the team in 2 hours before, but it is only reserve players (people not in the show).  So there will still be the Drumline Step Show in front of Revelli and there still will be the march over to the Stadium as normal.

If you haven't seen either the Step Show or the March to the Stadium you really need to.  They are a great part of the game day experience.

The Band is scheduled to rehearse 10am - 12noon at Elbel Field. followed by a quick tailgate to feed the members. (Same location) This rehearsal is open to the public and offers limited seating in some bleachers. I'm only guessing here, but 12:30 would be a good time to head to Ravelli Hall on Hoover Street. The Drumline will perform on the steps to Ravelli (hence step show), then the entire band will line up for inspection. This moves rather quickly and is worth watching. They will head west on Hoover to begin the march to the stadium. This is how it went last year, as my son is in the MMB. I hope you get the chance to be there before the game, it really adds to the pregame festivities! I'll call my son today, and if I find out otherwise, I'll post it here.

This is the route the MMB takes on gameday:

Directions from Revelli to Big House

Step Show is followed by the march over to the Stadium, through the Tailgaters in the Northeast Parking lot, to the Tunnel on the East side of the Stadium (next to Crisler).

Timing is of course tbd, as most of us don't know how the Victors Walk that RR has added will affect the MMB, though I know some have posted what they know (that Victors Walk shouldn't effect most of the band)
