U-M Hockey vs WI - Friday Open Thread

WI's goalie was most unsievelike, stopping 17 shots in the 1st period and holding U-M off the scoreboard until the 2nd period, where we got 2. Blankenburg's goal was especially nice as 4-on-4 he skated in uncovered to the front of the net, got the goalie to go down for a potential redirect, but instead he moved the puck to the side and put a backhand in the open net. Ports got the shutout.

Samoskevich on Beniers' line, Morgan on Lambert's, Granowicz on Van Wyhe's. Keranen the extra skater, Edwards & Pehrson are 3rd D pair.

The guy looking right at it is a linesman, they don’t call penalties. Reviews aren’t allowed to create 2 minute penalties, only 5 minute majors. They deemed a cross check to the head of a player on the ice wasn’t worthy of a 5 apparently.

Not seeing the cross-check live is at least understandable in defense of the refs. I think botching the review (and the half dozen other blatant calls) is a much worse offense.

“Can,” but virtually never do. It has to be blatantly a major penalty for them to step in and do so. And even then it’s highly unlikely you see a linesman try to step in and overrule a referee.

And as we saw from the video review, there was apparently not enough for that to be a major penalty. The consequences of a linesman overstepping a referee to call a major, and then that major being overturned in video review (as it apparently would have been) are pretty significant. Linesmen are pretty much content with letting referees do their job.
