Word for the wise, you might want to avoid MGoBlog during the 2010 World Cup.

i challenge anyone here on their knowledge of the beautiful game. tis my first love and i'm always up to discuss anything related to it. brodie, i am jealous that you're in london only b/c of this regardless of the fact that my team is in the northwest and can't stop winning.

Aren't they now on 29 games unbeaten? I think either Spain or Argentina will win 2010. I am not sure anyone in the world can mark Lionel Messi. That guy is unbelievable. I think the only way to stop him is for a team to deliberately injure him like Pele in 1966 or Maradona in 1990.

We must also consider that the tournament will be played in South Africa, meaning some extreme heat could really hinder some of the more moderate-climate teams, like England, which in turn would also favor the southern European and South American squads.

Winter in South Africa is during June, July and August. http://www.southafrica.info/travel/advice/climate.htm During winter the temperatures look like they are in the 50s and 60s Fahrenheit. The weather will not be a factor the way it has been at every World Cup since 1978 (Argentina). That is good - Paul Scholes' red face, and the stories of Ronald Koeman losing 15 pounds of water weight during WC 94 made me wonder why they were playing daytime games (I learned that TV was the answer).

I wasn't sure about that-- I was working under the assumption that it's always hot in South Africa, no matter what season. Although I like what Cappello has done with England so far, and I can see them making a deep run, I cannot see them winning the whole thing. Just too many bad international results this decade to give me any confidence. And they got blanked by Spain last week 2-0.

in possession the way Latin teams are. They lose the ball and then run around for minutes trying to get it back like in the EPL (think against Brazil in 2002). Plus the team is getting old. Lampard, Gerrard, Becks, Terry, Rio are on the wrong side of 30. Rooney is a red card waiting to happen. Scholes is badly missed. A$hley Cole is a petulant baby. I think Ashley Young and Abonglahor (sp?) should play more. Their best chance to succeed in 2010 is to play for penalty kicks, which is just a weak way to play but part of the game (but we should know better than have Sepp Blatter fix the problems in soccer, like no instant replay).

re england: capello is a great coach but england wont get past the quarters. besides rooney they don't have great forwards and they lack depth and quality at GK. david james is far too inconsistent, robert green and paul robinson still haven't proven themselves at the international level. they basically have to rely on a solid midfield and defense (although Terry is arguably the most overrated player in the world) and pray that somebody besides rooney or gerrard will get them goals. it's the usual suspects in terms of WC contenders. brazil, argentina, and spain now that they are actually performing in competitions. italy and france are ageing, more so italy, and i don't see either side doing as well as past tournaments. my prediction is that in South Africa, the U.S. has 2002 experience and gets relatively far. all the african teams will do well now that they're playing in their own backyard for once. but i still see argentina or brazil taking it all.

Actually they do according to Fifa they are tied for first in their group with serbia 5 points up on 3rd place france so they are going pretty well if they can keep it up.

Turbo and Brodie I agree with you guys about England, I don't seem them making a significant run this time around. I think at this time Spain is the team to beat. Only once the groups are announced we will have a good picture. Hopefully US is not in a hard group like last time.

I'll be in Barcelona in late May. As of now I'm planning on going to the Barcelona vs. Osasuna at Camp Nou. It's the first time I'll be in Europe and the time we're in Barca just happened to intersect with a home game. It appears like there's plenty of tickets still available on their website, but they don't open to the public until April.... Anyone been to a big time soccer game in Europe? What's scalping like over there? If I wasn't able to get tickets would I still be able to find a way into the stadium?
