And, I couldn't think of a better way to begin Week 1 than for this video to be the main one for this day's installment (in honor of one of our current #7s too, of course)...

I challenge you NOT to enjoy this. It's impossible!

Also (I promise I'll shut up after this), worth mentioning here that Dr. Sap wrote a great piece on Mr. Ricky Leach's case for the college football hall of fame in this year's edition of HTTV.

While the print option won't be sold until they're in stock, digital copies are STILL AVAILABLE — I don't know what you're doing if you haven't read it yet (especially with glorious content week in just a couple days)!

I was born in 1973 so I was too little to remember Rick Leach as Michigan’s QB but I do remember him coming up through the minors and making it to the Tigers and everyone talking about his UM QB days!

Question:

You used to hear Rick call into the radio and participate in alumni type activities quite a bit.  However, I haven’t heard his name mentioned in the last 3-4 years nor heard that he was sick or anything like that.

Does anyone know what happened and why we don’t see him around the program or haven’t heard his name in a while?

I know he was doing some PR work for the Tigers a few years back. The MGoGirlfriend had her company's client outing in one of the suites at Comerica Park. Leach stopped by, and she said he was nice. But since then, I haven't heard anything.

I'm four years younger than Leach, and I grew up hating him. But that's because he went to a rival school (Flint Southwestern), and we could never beat those bastards (a distressing fact that continued throughout my own less-than-stellar high school career.) After years of hating him, it took some effort to cheer for him in Maize & Blue.

My brother-in-law played football and baseball with him at SW, and has some very interesting stories about ol' #7.

[EDIT: I eagerly added my comment immediately on seeing Rick Leach mentioned but I should've known JWG would mention Dr. Sap's article. So, DITTO with emphasis]

The GREAT Ricky Leach.

Read Dr. Sap's article, "The Case for Induction of Rick Leach's Induction into the College Hall of Fame," p. 112, in this year's edition of Hail to the Victors

Ricky Leach.  #7.  He was the best short yardage option QB we ever had. (note: not backed up by any statistics...)  We were all nervous about Bo starting Ricky as a true freshman that year, but the kid knew how to win.  It was a bitter loss to OSU in the big house that year, letting them come back late in the 4th quarter after stoning their offense (featuring Archie Griffin) for the entire second half.  It wasn't Ricky's fault that Cornelius Greene evaded Tim Davis deep in his own end zone and hit Brian Baschnagel on that critical 4th down play. We returned the favor the following year with a serious dismantling of the Buckeyes in their own crib.

I was at that game. I remember watching Archie's brother Ray Griffin (#44) intercepting Leach to seal it. So disappointing… I was at the 73 tie game and the narrow loss in 79 (my sophomore year). Never got to see them beat Ohio in person. But I've watched plenty of them on YouTube, some several times. Leach was so fun to watch running the option. And he eventually got to be a good passer, outdoing Joe Montana at Notre Dame in 78.
