Super OT: The Wire

Submitted by mbrummer on
I'm almost embarrassed for asking this on this site but I think I will get the best answer here. That and there's a lot of The Wire references on here. I have never watched The Wire, but enough people recommended to me, where when I saw a great deal on it I bought the whole series. So I'm asking on recommendations on how to watch the series. One a day? Season by Season? One every couple of days? I think when I start watching more than a couple a night, its loses something. Let Me know what you guys think.

Oh, dear God, thank you, you are such a good God to us. A kind and gentle and accommodating God, and we thank You oh sweet, sweet Lord of hosts for the smorgasbord You have so aptly laid at our table this day, and each day, by day, day by day, by day oh dear Lord three things we pray to love Thee more dearly, to see Thee more clearly, to follow Thee more nearly, day, by day, by day. Amen.

and if it seems slow in the first half of the first season realize that the writer spent about 20 years living the police side of things and had a plan for 5 seasons of the show. So once they get their Major Crimes Unit up and on its feet things pick up. Then you'll figure out how quickly you want to get through it. Just make sure to watch it in order. And just so you know that series doesn't peak after two seasons and then drag on the rest of the way like The Sopranos. I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but you have to watch it in order its not like 24, where you'll figure things out if you skip an episode or season here and there.

It's my favorite show. I bought the first season and watched it in a couple days. The second and third seasons went just about as fast, and then I was caught up for the last couple as they aired. A couple episodes at a time might be good, so you can get the hang of who everybody is. There's alotta faces to learn and put names to. I've re-watched the first three seasons recently, and will be finishing up the last two soon. I hate the fact there won't be any more after that, dammit.

It never gets tiring and boring, and the suspense between episodes is enough to make it something to look forward to every day. Baorao is right though, you have to give it a few episodes until you learn the characters. It sucks you in for good around episode 5 of the first season. I've found each season takes a couple episodes to get into as I learn the names of the new characters in each theme. I think it's the best acting I've ever seen in television. Each character fits perfectly.

The Wire is probably my favorite show ever. Definitely start with the first season. It introduces you to the main characters throughout the series (obviously). It probably isn't for everyone though. The whole show basically runs on character development, which some may find boring. I think that if by the end of first season, if you don't feel some of the characters' pain (you'll figure it out as you watch), you probably won't dig the rest of the show. I was hooked instantly (honestly I feel the urge to go rent a season right now). All the season's are great, but I like the 4th one the best. The 5th one is good too, provides closure to the show and kind of rounds everything out.

I think season 2 is the only one that I wasn't crazy about. I tried to watch season 2 before season 1 since I got it as a gift, but it didn't work. The show picks up slowly and doesn't have the same sort of story arcs that usual shows have. That means that big events don't always happen at the beginning and wrap up neatly in the end of episodes. But Omar is my dude. Greatest "bad guy" of any TV show or movie.

I think the reason season 2 is considered the "black sheep" so to speak is because it's more of a stereotypical cop show -- police vs. organized crime and what not. In every other season its about the people, the ordinary corner boys, cops, etc. and the drugs and crime and violence are at times secondary. You never really see what kind of people the Greeks are like you do with the Barksdale Crew and Marlo. Yeap, I'm definitely renting season 1 now, you guys have gotten me hooked.

at your leisure. Soak it in. If you liked "Homicide, Life on the Street" you'll thoroughly enjoy the Wire. It was one of the BEST shows, if not the best show on TV. And like the others, it's too bad there won't be any more seasons. It was like losing a dear and close friend when it ended. Here's to you, Bunk!

As others have suggested, don't give up on it early. The first season is very suspenseful towards the end, but it starts a bit slow. The early episodes of the second season leave much of what you came to love about the first season. Every season, a new aspect of the city is added to the fold, so if you don't want to/can't watch them all at once, the season's are good breaking points. A fair amount of "time" in the story passes between each season, IIRC.

More than two a day is hard - I watched the first 3 via the DVD route and had a hard time seeing more. Seasons 1 and 4 are the best TV ever made. 3 is just merely really awesome. I liked 2 fine, and sort of disliked 5.

---- Kind of spoiler, don't read if you want to know anything ---- when my uncle called me (he's the one the introduced me to the show) and says "Well well well, looks like they finally got ------". I missed the episode the night before, he assumed I saw it. I'm still kind of pissed about it.

I watched the first two last night. I feel like I'm already addicted. I don't think it's slow at all. There's no way I could watch more than 2 a night, its just too intense too much information going on. Also, I was a huge fan of Homicide, so I feel that some the characters are carry overs, even though not named the same or played by the same characters. So that drew me in as well, although it was odd seeing Garrity as a Judge and Luthor Mahoney as the Medical Examiner in the first couple episodes.

there's no real "best" way to watch. Just take it in and latch onto whatever interests you most. Don't stop until you've finished season 1, even if you think it blows.
