"Substitution with the Intent to Deceive"

Someone please explain it to me. 10 point swing right there in my opinion.

Go Blue.

Mod edit: Here's the rule. Link. JGB.

Look, I was plenty upset about the reffing in the first half, and the targeting call that was overturned was pretty ridiculous, but your comments are just going to fuel the fire unnecessarily and deceive people who didn't see the play.

"... how is [Butt] supposed to go out wide to start the play?  By walking?"  Not only did Butt break the huddle before any of his teammates did, he broke the huddle before the players entering the game had even made it to the huddle.  The way in which he went out wide was hardly typical and was clearly meant to deceive Rutgers.

Secondly, the ref did not wait to throw the flag until after the completion.  The ref standing by Butt threw the flag in the air as soon as Michigan snapped the ball, which was evident on the replays the BTN showed during the game. Dierdorf himself noted this in the radio broadcast, and assumed that Michigan was going to receive some sort of procedural infraction.

It was the end of the first half. Seems to me players regularly leave the huddle early or skip the huddle in the 2 minute drill. If Butt is in the cluster of substitutes I get it, but arguing over the timing of when he left the huddle, to me, is weak.

I was at the game, and admittedly things have a tendency to happen bang-bang. From my vantage point, I thought I saw the ref look to his right (downfield) at the snap as Butt ran out alone and then throw the flag, but I would trust video more than my vantage point from the eastern sideline of the stadium.

The B1G refs think Harbaugh's a prick and want to stick it to him.

I'm also sure that Delaney wants to pick up the crew that the ACC just fired after Duke/Miami.

By the letter of the law it appears that it was a correct and astute call by the ref. Really reached deep in the rulebook to remember that one.

I thought maybe you could argue Butt left the huddle late enough after the subs that it truly wasn't deception (and I have to imagine the staff was aware of the rule and designed the slight delay to try to get away with it) but the ref felt otherwise.

Hard to argue much after reading the rule

Putting aside the flag for a moment, why do you run that play with a tight end? Seems like the same play to Chesson goes for six.
