The stockpiling of WR's

Submitted by B Ready on
There has been some expressed concern that perhaps we are taking too many WR's. But, it should be noted, that some of these guys may come in and switch positions. RR is all about bringing as many athletes in as possible, getting them on campus, and then finding where they fit. Potentially, in 2010, here are our outside WR's... Sr. Rogers Clemons (can play slot, as well) Jr. Hemingway Stonum So/Fr (depending on redshirting this year, or not) Roundtree Gordon Stokes Fr. Miller Jackson Robinson So, max, in 2010, we have 10 outside WR's. That is enough to make a 4-deep, so that is good depth. But, a couple of these guys can now switch positions and provide depth elsewhere, if need be. Rogers could go to DB. Clemons could go to slot again. Gordon could play linebacker and help our depth there. Robinson could be a candidate to play safety. I say, get as many athletes with speed as possible on to the field, and let their natural abilities shine. We have offers out to at least 6 more WR's. If more want to come, I doubt RR would turn them down. As long as these guys are "athletes" and are able to play multiple positions at the D-1 level, there will always be room for them.

Fuck it, lets get a class of 25 WRs/Athletes. Change football and get an O-line of 5 guys at 6ft 200lbs(it'll help when we need blockers after a 50 yd gain bc fat lineman cant get there). Just kidding. But yah, Keep getting athletes bc theres always WR,RB,QB(direct snaps), CB and S. (Maybe linebacker if they really bulk up, speedy LBs running 4.4 40 is always good)

Does anyone think that Darryl Stonum will start to make more of an impact in the next couple of years? I know he was only a freshman, but with the influx of new talent he is going to have to beat out a lot of people for solid playing time.

I think he will be one of the 4 outside WR's who get consistent PT this year. Matthews, Hemingway and Stokes imo will be the others. Gordon redshirts. Savoy, Rogers, Roundtree and Clemons get spot duty here and there. Of these 4, I think Savoy and Clemons would see the most reps. I have a feeling Rogers might go back to DB (like he was as a freshman) to help our depth over there.

Stonum is supremely talented. Unless his attitude just sucks (and all accounts say it doesn't, he was consistently one of the best players in practices), he'll be near the top of the depth chart. Remember he was an early enrollee last year; he's already been "practicing" and studying the playbook for over a year now.

An excellent S prospect.....here's his off/def numbers Robinson notched 34 catches for 756 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior and 56 tackles, seven interceptions and 11 pass break-ups at safety. He also forced and recovered two fumbles.

We'll lets see; Rogers started out at DB, moved to WR, didn't do shit, and most likely will move back to DB to add to depth. I think Hemingway is overrated; he had the one good TD catch against Utah and everyone thinks he's next great receiver at Michigan. Stonum and Matthews will be our two outside WRs. Clemons hasn't really don't anything while he's been here. Yes, we most definitely will take help at WR position, especially kids who have been playing in spread offenses for years. You don't turn down 3 kids who are the #1 WRs in their respective states.

This post really annoys me...if I remember correctly people were worrying about 2 months ago how RR wasn't bring in enough outside WR's and now we apparently have too many. Dude went 3-9 and still grabbed a top 10 class; leave him alone, he knows what he is doing!

I agree with you somewhat. However, Rodriguez hasn't really shown that his recruiting classes will produce results. Just because some private scouting services have ranked his class highly doesn't mean that he knows what he's doing. It just means he brought in players that those services liked. (I'm not saying Rodriguez doesn't know what he's doing. I'm just saying there's room for questioning.)
