spreads for Big 10 games

Submitted by jamiemac on

Early lines are out for next saturday, the first day of league play in the Big 10. These are not predictions or picks.....and the road team is listed first.

Wisco -6.5 at UM.....wow, almost a TD home dog. Hmmm

Illini +15.5 at Penn St.....finally Nits play a team with a pulse. Prime time ABC game.

Minny +19 at Ohio St....Gophers have a sneaky offense so far this year, but gotta wonder if they can handle the upgrade in competition. This could be high scoring.

MSU -8 at Indiana....Sparty laying a lot of points on the road in this one, but I would not bet against Ringer going over the 200 yard mark for the third straight week. IU is soft and MSU should be able to name their score by just banging away with Javon.

NW +7 at Iowa......there used to be a time when Iowa was automatic at home, but I think this game is a coin flip.

Purdue +3.5 at ND......if Purdue's offense is clicking, I dont know if the Irish can keep up. But, PU has a terrible history in South Bend and have been at their worst the last three years when playing a good team. Alright, cue the 'is ND even a good team' arguments.

Any thoughts on these games.....Discuss.

Penn State to cover; Spartans to cover; Northwestern and the points; ND to cover ... as for Michigan I actually thought the line would be higher.  I was thinking 8 or 9 and that would have been an easy pick.  I just dont think Wisconsin has the offensive fire power to blow us out, of course if we make as many mistakes as last game then cue the blowout.  But something tells me this will be a tight game, much like last years Penn State game; hopefully with a similar outcome.

I have a good feeling about the Wisc game.  Michigan's small quick backs against their big run stuffing defense.  I just think Michigan will match up very well against them and have a good chance to win.

If Mizzou couldn't beat the Illini by 15.5 there is no way PSU can cover this spread.

I know PSU looked good so far but I really think it is only a matter of time before Jay-Pa brings them back down to earth.

IIRC, it was Juice's freshman year when JoePa hung something like 66 on the Illini... in Urbana... for homecoming. Perhaps a bit of motivation for the Illini.

That being said, Chase Daniel absolutely shreaded the Illini D (now sans American-flag necktie) so it is possible that they are vulnerable against the spread.

It pains me to say this, but give me the Illini and the points.  There is just no way Penn State has made that big of a turn around.

That big blowout by Penn State was 2005, a year before Juice arrived.   That is a really big spread though.

Two other notables that stick out to me are Wisky giving us 6.5 and Sparty only giving 8.5.  Indiana lost by 21 points to Ball State.  I like Sparty to cover there.  I like Michigan to cover getting 6.5 as well.  I don't see a ton of points being scored in our game.

And now that I think about it, I really like Northwestern getting points at Iowa.  Iowa sucks in a big way, and Northwestern is at least good enough to force you to do more than throw your jockstrap on the field.

Jamie, the way you got blown to shreds this weekend, I'm hoping you have a reversal of fortune. I don't want to have to start a "save Jamiemac" fund-raising thread on the WLA.

....does not have quite the same ring as "Save Ferris" does it?!?!

I did take a hit on Saturday and gave back a lot of the cash I had already won on the college season......but there's plenty of season to go......and, if I can channel my inner Phil Steele, I fell victim to a total of 3 net closes losses.......expect me to be the most improved capper next weekend.

Seriously, though, scores in the last minute of both the LSU and Stanford really did me in.....had LSU been held to a FG at the end and Stanford just kneeled down in victory formation, none of the blood letting would have happened.  I had action on 6 night games and the endings in those games flipped me from 4-2 to 2-4!!!

Those events in tandem were a $230 swing on my account. Throw in the UNC choke job from earlier in the day and I had the makings of a great day pulled out from underneath me.

Thats why they call it gambling.....and it serves me right as I wagered on way too many games on Saturday.
