Spotlight on (C) Graham Glasgow

Submitted by UMProud on

"My ride, personally, hasn't been the smoothest of rides. There have been the ups and downs of Coach (Brady) Hoke (who recruited him). And there were the ups and downs of myself off the field. It's been tough, but it's definitely made me a better person, a better man and a better player."

And now he's playing his best football.

Glasgow defied the odds by becoming something special. He said he had plenty of scholarship offers at Mid-American Conference schools but decided to walk on at a Big Ten school. He took Ohio State's offer to become a "preferred" walk-on, but switched to the Wolverines after Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel resigned just prior to Glasgow's graduation from Marmion Academy in Aurora, Illinois.

"I didn't want to be left over from one coaching staff to another," said Glasgow. "I didn't know who my coach there would be. So, I said, 'You know what? I don't want to go there anymore.' I chose here. Michigan is a big school on the biggest stage and why not go for it?"

We have an OL coach guru and the physically impressive, to-be Junior son of an OL coach guru waiting for his opportunity.

That's not a knock against Glasgow.  It's just humblebrag that we are probably past the days of relying on extradinary individuals to be our only good players in spite of poor coaching or youth.

In one sense, I agree. Glasgow has been a great lineman. Individually, he is difficult to replace.

Where I think we are in much better shape is the depth. Which I blame completely on RR, and not on Hoke.

  • With four starters (Magnuson, Cole, Braden, and Kalis) returning, you only have to replace one person.
  • With Kugler having two years to play, there is someone not starting who is being groomed as center right now.
  • With six other hungry OL, (Bars, Dawson, Runyan, Newsome, Bushell-Beatty, Ulizio), plus the four starters, there has to be at least one other center, if Kugler struggles.
  • With Drevno, they are getting solid coaching. (Q:  who else helps coach the OL?)
  • With Onwenu, Bredeson, Swenson, and Hamilton, we already have a decent incoming class. And I wouldn't be surprised if Terrance Davis is added, bringing the group to 5 incoming.

Where Michigan will be challenged will be in 2017, when we replace 4 starters. But I'm sure they're already prepping for that now. All in all, we have moved back towards having a solid, dominant OL year in and year out. That's Michigan football.

Interesting how he didn't want to go to OSU due to their coaching turnover and lo and behold here he is. Glad he worked through it.

and I'm glad Glasgow has taken advantage of his great opportunity. He has stablized the center position. Too often, since Molk left, our plays would be blown up due to immediate penetration right up the middle.
