Shafer vs. RR
How much of a difference would it have made if Shafer was allowed to pick his own defensive coaches? Its obvious that RR is here to run the offense and the defense should be left to the DC. We saw what happened at Auburn on offense when they brought in a OC but kept all of the asst coaches from the previous regime. Would Shafer have had more success if he were allowed to bring in his guys?
How will this effect the next DC. Seemingly he will be forced to work with the coaches that are already in place. There may again be the problem of the asst. coaches be used to a completely different system than the DC.

that's usually how it works. it went deeper than that. for example muschamp at texas is working with the guys that were already there.

give mike barwis a winged helmet and pads, throw him out there, and see what he does

could smoke fools at LB without a helmet and pads. he'd also be the first ever 6 star recruit.

Add Shafer who didn't buy into RR's program. Though we'll never know EXACTLY what went on behind the scenes, I am going to guess that Shafer never really had full control and was the odd man out. I can only see the rational choice of Hopson to be named the new DC. Why would anyone who isn't part of RR's circle take a chance when all but one is an ex-WV coach?
