Semi-OT: B.J. Daniels

Submitted by Magnum P.I. on
One of the two 2008 recruits that RR made a big push for to come in and play QB during his first season, B.J. Daniels, had a huge day for USF against FSU. The other, of course, was Pryor. I'm very happy with how our QB situation is playing out (although one of these guys may have been able to prevent great suffering last year), but it's interesting to compare Daniels' stats with Pryor's. Daniels was rated the 8th best dual-threat QB that year by Rivals; Pryor, as we all know, was the number one overall recruit. Daniels has only had significant playing time in USF's last two games, so the sample for comparison is small. Daniel's last two games (Charleston Southern and FSU, both wins): PASSING: 18/34, 364 YDS, 3 TD, 2 INT RUSHING: 31 ATT, 231 YDS, 2 TD Pryor's last two games (Toledo and Illinois, both wins): PASSING: 23/41, 344 YDS, 4 TD, 2 INT RUSHING: 23 ATT, 169 YDS, 1 TD And for fun, here's Tate's line for the last two wins: PASSING: 18/34, 252 YDS, 2 TD, 1 INT RUSHING: 16 ATT, 20 YDS, 1 TD And Tate and Denard combined: PASSING: 20/41, 291 YDS, 2 TD, 3 INT RUSHING: 30 ATT, 104 YDS, 3 TD

From what I saw, Leavitt called some great plays and put Daniels in a position to succeed. His two big plays, leading to 14 of the 17 points, were to ridiculously (5-10 yards) wide-open recievers. One was for a TD and one got them inside the five. I think Daniels could have at least gone 6-6 at UM last year. If UM couldn't have him, though, I am glad to see Daniels do well here. He is definitely easing a lot of angst in the Tampa Bay area over losing semi-local (Lakeland area) product Matt Grothe for the rest of the year. At any rate, he should be the story of the week in college football, unless Tim Tebow was throwing up from a head injury tonight instead of the flu.
