Sara Driesenga is Big Ten's Co-Freshman of the Week

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

Sara Driesenga was a little nervous Friday afternoon.  She is the first Freshman in several years to start the season opening game.  This is completely understandable because Michigan has been her "dream school" since she was in the womb.  I cannot confirm this but I would not be surprised if her lovely mother listened to The Victors on her Walkman when Mom was working out while she was carrying the young star.  It is also very likely that her parents did not sing lull-a-byes to her.  Instead, they sang "The Yellow and Blue".

Fast forward to last Friday.  The opening game was against La Tech.  Sara walked the first three batters in the first inning but then settled in just fine.  She knuckled down, worked hard and got out of the inning without any damage.  She then settled into her groove and shut down La Tech through 4 innings and got the win.

She pitched on Saturday against #25 LSU and started off very strong.  She ended the weekend with 2 wins and a .64 ERA.  She went 2 for 4 at the plate to help herself out as well.  Because of her efforts, she was awarded the Co-Freshman of the Year award given out by the Big Ten.

Congratulations Sara.  You deserve it.  Thanks for joining the family and we wish you all the success in the world.  Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue.

I am looking forward to seeing her on TV soon. I went to a gold tournament to see her last summer, but she was not there with her team, although Coach Hutch was. Dutch pride!

that played in a summer tournament that her team was at.  This was a few years ago and she did not pitch.  I was excited to get to see her pitch but to no avail.

She is an amaizing pitcher as is Haylie.  Coach will have 4 years of "who do I pitch today?"  Its a nice problem to have by the way.

Congrats Sara.  I know your parents are very proud of you as everyone here on MgoBlog is proud of you.

Good to see finally how her talent translates to the college level.  With the continued hard work her parents have taught her, we are going to see some great things.  Things that we haven't seen in a while.

Well, I love that stuff.  Keep it coming.  It really enriches the experience of being a fan (IME) when you feel like you "know" the athletes a little bit.

I haven't followed softball too closely in the past, other than knowing they are good, admiring Coach Hutch, and worrying over Bree after her accident.  But I'm planning to go hog wild on softball this spring.  Would love to have many fellow MGoBloggers on the ol' bandwagon.
