Saints' Sean Payton, 56, recovering well after CV19 infection

Good to see, considering his age (56) bumps him up into the higher risk area.

Can't say I like Payton on a personal level (he never should have been allowed to coach again after the whole fiasco with targeting opposing players), but I don't wish sickness on anybody.

Interesting fact: Todd Haley (WR), Sean Payton (AHC/QB), Tony Sparano (TE) and Mike Zimmer (DC) were all on Bill Parcells' staff at the same time with the Dallas Cowboys.

Not sure what you are basing this on?   If it is polls showing greater concern, maybe it because people are concerned that someone near them may die?    I think many who passed this off as nothing are revising their personal opinions upward.    That isn’t influenced by the projected mortality rate as much as it is by seeing more deaths and hospitalizations closer to home.

Deaths in China, not so scary.   Deaths in Europe, a bit more scary.    Deaths in Washington, slightly more scary.    Friend if friend on ventilator scarier still.    It is just human nature.

Fair post.  My evidence is/was a mix of anecdotal and a couple polls I've seen.

I admit that I am more comfortable with "death is a part of life, try not to fear it too much" than most people.  Perhaps a function of my experiences: I saw 4 HS classmates die over the course of 18 months, then a handful of deaths of those close to me in my 20s and 30s.

In reading most of your posts, I suspect we’d be on different sides on many issues, but I also think you’d be someone I could have a beer with and have a thought provoking dialogue on a controversial topic that I’d leave a better person for having gotten your insights.

Thanks for being a good role model for making your points while staying out of the muck.  Many of us (definitely including myself) would do well to emulate your online temperament more.

Thanks - I'm admittedly much more Libertarian as regards "the proper reaction to Coronavirus" than most Americans.

But it is definitely the crisis of our lifetimes.  I do understand where others are coming from.

I love having beers and just shooting the shit.  My favorite times in life.  Actually, I've had multiple people, including my Mom, tell me I missed my calling in life.  That I should have become a philosophy professor!

(talk about people who make a career out of just shooting the shit!)

It’s an incredibly contagious disease with a fairly high mortality rate. I think people who try to be cavalier about it because it’s less than 3% (or whatever it turns out to be) really lack empathy.

They are building mass graves in countries, hospitals are close to capacity even with physical distancing measures, we lack the right equipment to cope with the influx of sick patients. I think it’s completely obvious why people are scared. And it’s not some left wing media conspiracy theory. It’s human behavior and really shouldn’t come as a surprise once you get your head out of your models and actually consider that humans are incredibly emotional and often irrational at times of strife.

As stats get worse, media will get more outlandish and once it affects those near them it’s at its scariest. I’ve also been hearing the term “deadly disease” thrown around a lot more by media than was the case a few weeks ago. This disease can be deadly yes but when that kind of verbiage is used people start thinking it’s Ebola on a mass scale. Which it’s not. Awful virus, yes. Death sentence? No.

I get that, but there is a place for both empathy and knowledge in times of crises.

For instance, you mention 3% as a potential mortality rate.  Perhaps the CFR will be that high.  But I don't think there's any scientist who is conjecturing the IFR --- which is honestly the more meaningful number --- will be that high.

Now, what percent of the population knows the difference in definition between CFR and IFR?  Virtually nobody!  And that's 3 weeks into this crisis!

That's the sort of knowledge the media could be passing along.  But isn't.

Fear is a natural human emotion.  Empathy helps those who are fearful, especially in the short-term.  So does acquisition of knowledge, especially in the longer-term.

You’re making a critical point which is not familiar to many people.

I’m on staff at a large SE Michigan hospital group and I receive updated numbers nightly.  Our

case fatality rate is almost exactly 3% but we don’t yet know the true incidence of infection

so any guess at an infection fatality rate is just that, a guess.

We probably won’t know the true IFR until large numbers of people are tested for antibodies

either later this year or in 2021.

Minor symptoms and they tested him. I hate this shit. My sister, type 1 diabetic, flu like symptoms (or covid), self quarantined for 9 days and they won't test her.

Doesn’t need to be said but it’s because of who he is. It’s why people like Tom Hanks and anyone else with a notable name gets tested and cared for immediately.

Is it fair? No. But that’s just the way of the world. If you coach a football team or act in movies, you’re going to the front of the line.
