RR's press conference

From his press conference transcript:

On offense, he expects McGuffie, Shaw, Stonum, Barnum and MAYBE Odoms not to redshirt. He was complimentary of McGuffie and Shaw's mental aptitude so far, said Odoms was very hot & cold. He said Barnum was the one O-lineman most likely to crack the 2-deep due to depth at Guard.

On defense, he sees Martin, Cissoko, Floyd, Brandon Smith, and maybe JB Fitzgerald as not redshirting.

He said sometimes the O-line is good, and sometimes "it's like a pillow fight". He thought Zirbel was doing quite well, but Zirbel hurt his knee yesterday and they expect him to miss a week of practice.

He said Nick Sheridan is now on permanent scholarship, and if the season started to day, he'd probably have Sheridan and Three split the game. He stressed about one bazillion times that they're dead even (Rivals observers, by the way, said Sheridan looked much better than Threet the past two days). Regardless, he said that the QB's were much improved from early last week.

Threet and Sheridan are dead even? Does that mean that Sheridan got really good this year, or that they both suck?  I thought that Threet looked way better than Sheridan in the spring game.

Also, it sounds like McGuffie and Shaw are ahead of Robinson, and Barnum is ahead of O'Neil...interesting

I'm not sure Nick Sheridan was ever really that bad.  We never heard of him before this year simply because everyone talked about Henne and Mallett, and figured it would never need to go beyond that.  Sheridan was a walk-on, from what I understand, mostly due to his high school injury situation, not because he was just a bad football player.  He might be like a Mike Hart type of guy who doesn't have much as far as measurables, but can play good football.

It also sounds like he's a better fit for the position than Threet is, so I'm kind of excited to see what he can do.

There's no reason behind this, but maybe he can be Greise-esque. His dad is an NFL coach, so I'm sure he had a pretty good handle on fundamentals, etc. Regardless, I truly think Threet will be getting most of our snaps, but it seems like a dead certainty that Sheridan will get PT.

Rodriguez did say that any rotation will be "situational", and not scripted; i.e. no set rotation a la Henson replacing Brady at the beginning of the 2nd quarter.  RR said that hes never scripted rotation.  The video from MGoBlue.com on Saturday showed Sheridan running the zone read option and looking decent doing so; however, although it was from the first day with pads, quarterbacks were not live . . . so it was basically meaningless but he did look fleet-footed enough to possibly pull it off.

I'm beginning to feel a new wave of optimism for this season based on the possible emergence of former walk-on Nick Sheridan as the quarterback to run RR's offense.  I wonder what Dex will think of that.

Just so I'm clear:

Barwis + 5-star = Gorilla with chainsaw dick

Barwis + 3-star = 5-star.

so....

Barwis + Walk-On = 2-star?

Right - Barnum making the 2-deep has nothing to do with O'Neill. They don't play the same position.
