Rooting Interest: Mount St. Mary's
In the MGoBlue "Defend the Block" NCAA tourney preview podcast, Brian Boesch interviewed a radio guy for Mount St Mary's, who said (~47min) four times when the Mount has been a 16 seed, the 1 seed that beat them won the tournament the following year: 2017 Villanova - won 2018, etc. for 2008 UNC, 1999 MSU, 1995 KY.
So go Mountaineers! Beat the Tigers!
That's a neat little stat lol. Kinda lines up well with Michigan's recruiting class and the idea of Dickinson coming back as well as maybe Smith too. Even with or without Smith, you have to imagine they'll be active looking for transfer guards and wings.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but Smith has another year of eligibility?
EVERYBODY has another year of eligibility.
Cool. I knew that was the case for football, but wasn't sure about the other Fall/Winter programs.. Thanks!
I'm nervous regardless of whomever we play. Without Livers and the way in which we've been playing the last 3 weeks.....
Should win regardless of first round opponent, but then it's a gauntlet.
Go Blue!
So you're saying that a #1 seed (probably #1 overall) has a chance of being good the next year?? Geez, cool.
Good stuff. We're already owed a national championship for winning the 2019 Battle 4 Atlantis, so that will apply to this year. Beating MSM would give us the repeat title next year.
Oh cool! Someone else remembered the Atlantis stat and was thinking what I was thinking. (+1)
I didn't read all the comments before making my post below.
I will not bet everything on Michigan 2022 National Champs ... I will not bet everything on Michigan 2022 National Champs ...I will not bet everything on Michigan 2022 National Champs .... I just bet everything on Michigan 2022 National Champs.
Let's go Mount St. Mary's!!
and here i thought the tournament started tomorrow.
sorry sparty, you have to play the late game tonight. go UCLA bruins!
If Mount St. Marys wins we're literally guaranteed to be 2022 National Champions
100% of 1 seeds to beat a 16 seed Mount St Marys have won the the title the following year
100% of 1 seeds to lose to a 16 seed have won the title the following year
So I will be pulling hard for Mount St Marys tonight
Btw, I don't know if anyone remembers this but last season during the Atlantis Tournament there was a graphic which showed that the last 4-5 teams that won the tournament also won the NCAAT.
After Michigan's hot start, we fell back to earth with some close losses.
But perhaps Michigan would've continued the streak by going on a 2011 UConn-esque run. We'll never know since the NCAAT was cancelled.
Maybe the Atlantis thing and this MSM stat will combine to make a National Championship happen this year and help us go back-to-back b/c the universe owes us? Yes, I'm daydreaming but GO BLUE!
I will be rooting for MSM as the underdog with a guy that sees Smith eye-to-eye at point guard.
That said, it would be an upset after their best player left the team.
So far, so good
Welp. So much for this. Dammit.
Mount St. Mary's blew a 10 point halftime lead by letting Texas Southern start the 2nd half on a 11-0 run.
Texas Southern Tigers, your 2022 National Champs
