Recruiting posts & Do we feed the arrogance/entitled culture?

Submitted by uofmfan_13 on November 8th, 2020 at 3:50 PM

We all love recruiting news and posts... But maybe we should request a "pause" on the "Prediction based on..." Player/comp comparisons and general hype that go on each recruit / class post.

Appreciate the awesome research and free scouting info that Brian and team give through the blog. And we should absolutely welcome each recruit to the M family. But lets stop with the "he should be all-big ten by XX". Just stop already. Prove it on the field and prove it with wins.

If it can be scouted/researched, I'd much appreciate a post about each recruit's "heart"... Did they take plays off? Or did they display an "endless motor"? That's what we should celebrate. The stars matter but enough with the projections. We have zero clue about how each pans out and we need to stop feeding the entitlement mindset of Michigan football.

We want dogs. Don't care if we beat MSU by 1 or Ohio by 2 with the 19th rated Ohio player who looks like Chris Spielman.

What an odd post.

Projections are fun.  In-depth analysis (on motor, etc.). is readily available on almost any recruit.  Chris Spielman was, what would today be described as a 5-star recruit as a high schooler..  part of that reason being “he looked like Chris Spielman”.  And I’m RELIEVED to hear that you do NOT care about how much we beat OSU and MSU by.  I was worried earlier.

The projections that a young man will be XX in 3 short years just feed into unrealistic expectations by the fan base, create a mindset that "the coaches" can develop talent accordingly, and overall just hype what should be hype-less.

We want to congratulate the young man but dang... We haven't won anything, they aren't the savior, and we want dogs not cats.

At this point, I just feel bad for this site. The interest in M football generally is going to increasingly plummet. Feels like most fans have already written off the season specifically and Harbaugh generally.

I feel bad for Brian.  If Michigan drops their 3rd straight next weekend, I can’t imagine he’s going to want to watch each play in detail and write up another UFR.  For all of us, this is a hobby and we can shut it off.  For him, it’s where he earns a living.

Lol. I'm blaming nobody on mgoblog. I'm just suggesting lets get away from crowning new signees with anything beyond analysis on their strengths and future position(s). We should not be crowning ANYONE a future "all big ten Xx" because it literally does nothing but feed the hype beast. We need less hype more results.

Yep, I'm sure the analysis of recruits on this blog and player comps are really having an effect on how these players are developing and it's not at all on the coaching staff.

If these kids are coming in with arrogance because of what people write about them

1. I hope that the coaches are able see that and not want them

2. The real world is going to be really hard for them

This is why I don't follow recruiting. I never know how good a player should be. I want to see it on the field/court.

Players go to michigan to almost die. Come highly rated, have just okay careers, get drafted late, then become draft steals. Just shows how inept our coaching staff is at utilizing our talent.

I feel bad for daxton hill. He will leave michigan after three years playing for bad teams and having hardly any stats. He will still be drafted high because of his talent and  physical  attributes. He will star in the NFL  while his time at michigan goes largely forgotten.

When you play free safety you’re not supposed to have any stats - an occasional int or PBU just fine thank you - if you’re leading the team in tackles or otherwise getting noticed, it’s going to be a long year.

When everyone watching the game knows your best player is the safety, and wants him switched to a “more impactful” position, it’s going to be a long year.

Free safety is perhaps the loneliest position in football (maybe other than the kicker), if you get noticed it’s because you’re toast or don’t make the play, if you make the play  you’re supposed to nobody notices.

At least we won’t have to worry about overhyping heralded recruits with the inevitable decommitments that are sure to come our way. I’ve been supportive of JH until now but have seen enough that they can’t even sell me on the idea that Harbaugh’s job is secure let alone that they will develop players and put them in positions to succeed. If that’s the case, how are they ever going to be able to sell that snake oil to recruits? I have been involved with this program for long enough to know that they are highly unlikely to fire Harbaugh this year even though everyone knows that the end of nigh. So he is likely to remain a lame duck through the end of the 2021 season which means we will have to wait until the 2023 or maybe even 2024 class to have a shot at rebuilding the talent level of our roster.

We do want dogs.  From both Mi and moreso Ohio.  Might need to get Fickell to be able to do so.

In the examples below, A would be okay and B is over the line, correct?

A-  The new commit has a great motor, Chase Winovich type and a real dog on the field.

B-  The new commit reminds me a lot of Chase Winovich. He has a great motor and is a real dog on the field. He has the potential to be an All Conference player someday.

I don’t want to say the wrong thing and be the reason these players aren’t developing.

-just kidding - but I do like player comparisons and I don’t think it’s hurting or hindering anyone’s development.
