Pollin' It: Hockey remains at #3, Ferris jumps to #2

Submitted by gwkrlghl on

This week's hockey polls are out and a bit surprising (to me at least) is that Ferris leap-frogged us up to #2 in all the polls. Formerly #1 St Cloud lost and tied to #10 Union so we knew there'd be movement but I figured the tie would slide us both up. Apparently the tie at Yost has caused people to take Ferris' gaudy record seriously - which I'd say is a fair thing to do. Polls:

USCHO

Team (First Place Votes) Record Points Last Poll
1 Minnesota (32) 12- 2-2 978 2
2 Ferris State (12) 14- 2-3 914 4
3 Michigan   10- 2-2 888 3
4 St. Cloud State ( 4) 11- 2-3 855 1
5 Providence ( 2) 11- 2-3 834 5

USA Today

Team Points (First Place Votes) Last Poll Record
1 University of Minnesota 503 (28) 1 12-2-2
2 Ferris State University 442 (2) 4 14-2-3
3 University of Michigan 436   3 10-2-2
4 St. Cloud State University 416 (2) 2 11-2-3
5 Providence College 396   5 11-2-3

Also of note, Wisconsin is at #14/15 and Ohio State is in the "Others receiving votes" on USCHO - which basically puts them at #26 (of 59 DI teams so take that FWIW)

Before Ferris played us, their best opponent period was BGSU I think. They had been playing a bunch of no-names and their 13-2-1 record looked a little fake to a lot of people. For them to go into Yost and play #3 Michigan and come out with a draw basically said to everyone "Oh, they are good" and they got bumped up accordingly

The Borda method of voting (used by this and pretty much all college sports polls) can have all sorts of counter-intuitive results where, for example, none of the voters ranked Michigan and Ferris State any differently relative to each other after last weekend, but changes in how other teams are ranked can flip them in the overall ranking.

They did out play us for one period, but the other two were farly even. I am surprised we slipped behind them. I guess the voters liked the way they played on the road at Yost.
