Please don't C&P entire articles

Note: I deleted a thread that was a C&P of a Rivals article. I don't have a problem with people relating the gist of something, or quoting a small bit w/ a link, but wholesale copying is a no-go for reasons pragmatic (don't want to get sued) and otherwise (it is poor netiquette).

my scolding of the cut and paster, mixed in with some shaky law student analysis of the Fair Use Doctrine and opinion that these issues should be closely monitored resulted in this sticky thread. I will now make myself Honorary Fake Counsel to mgoblog.

People definitely shouldn't be cutting and pasting whole articles here. The gist of them with a link, however, is ok. News itself is not copyrightable. The presentation of the news, i.e. the author's relaying of that news via an article, is. Fair use is almost never a successful defense in practice. The preceding is not legal advice nor constitutes something that you should rely upon as legal advice.

What about in the case of freep/Detroit News garbage? that is unnecessarily negative? I hate giving them page views to read it but I still want to see what they have to say and I'm sure others feel the same way.

we are all here reading a source of unbiased and skewed news and enjoy it quite a bit. I know you're saying the freep should be objective and mgoblog doesn't pretend to, but the point of discussion on a blog such as this IMO is to sometimes respond to "biased" reports for the sake of our discussion and enjoyment. Mea culpa as it was I that c and p'd that thread. It was approx half the article and I was running out the door.
