Partial Scholarships
I apologize in advance if this subject was previously addressed. Question: I understand that with lesser profile sports - say soccer for example - partial scholarships are offered at most universities to facilitate a full roster of players. Is this practiced in football as well, or is football full ride only?

Only full rides are available in football and basketball. I believe in other sports, there's a maximum (less than 100%) scholarship amount for each player.

I know in hockey at least, you can give up to 100% to each player as long as you don't exceed a total of 18 scholarships amongst the team.
Edit: Actually, after some googling, it looks like most sports only have a minimum amount you can offer, i.e. each scholarship is worth between X and 100%.

There are also different rules from division to division.

Football scholarships are limited in number. Only 85 athletes can be on scholarship at any given time.
In soccer, there's a hard cap of scholarships (say, 20) that can be distributed in any way among any number of players.

I know your number for soccer scholarships was arbitrary but it's unfortunately much lower than that. Men's teams have a max of 9.9 and women's are 12. That makes getting a full ride very difficult. That can be divvied up a variety of ways.

Are (football) scholarships offered from year-to-year or in 4 (or 5) year blocks? I thought this is what you meant by "partial". I've read posts that say certain players won't be offered a fifth year on scholarship.

They are offered year-to-year, though just about every non-skeezy school will give at least 4 years to anyone.
That's not related to the OP's question though, which was about full tuition versus partial-tuition for the scholarship.

"non-skeezy school" is a direct reference to Saban.

And Calipari.

As others have said, football is a "head count" sport.
