OT- WHY TIGERS?!?!

Submitted by save_me_forcier on
Why do they insist on ripping my heart out every other game? Leyland sir, Why do you pull Galarraga in the middle of the 8th inning during a 1-hitter, right after he gets an out? Cabrera, why can you not get a hit (or even a sac fly) in a close game with runners in scoring position? 2 strikeouts in your first 2 at bats with runners in scoring position. Anderson, you look like a child in the big-boy batting cages every plate appearance. Absolutely Maddening...

Galarraga fails hard after 110 pitches normally. Suzuki and Branyan are lefties. Seay is typically lights out against lefties. The offense is what's letting the team down overall. Guillen injured and Ordonez being useless is killing run scoring. 40 combined HRs from Grandy and Inge and it's still not enough.

I agree that the offense is the problem. But on that topic, why not pinch Anderson for Ordonez. I know he hasn't been his best this year but he is certainly still a better hitter than Anderson. I believe Ordonez is actually still in the top 3 on the team in batting avg.

He pulled AG bc of the 2 lefties, but Seay has been pretty solid this year. Yeah the offense is just awful. No one on our team can get a sac fly. That is the big mystery of this team. The offense was the last thing we had to worry about going into the season. Grandy and Polanco are way below their career average. Yes I don't no why Anderson is playing. He should just be a pinch runner at best. Bad baserunner, bad hitter, and makes a lot of mistakes in the outfield.

The struggles shouldn't be that much of a shock really. Magglio's decline was inevitable and Guillen was a pretty big question mark, IHME. Everett isn't known for O, Thames has never been productive over a full season, Larish isn't ready and may never be, etc. The complete lack of runs is a little more shocking, but pretty much every worst case scenario came true for Maggs and Guillen.

Magglio's decline was inevitable, but like this? How fast he lost it is pretty crazy. Well Guillen has been injured this year and we should not expect much from him when he comes back. But Granderson is struggling average wise but not power. We really need a true leadoff hitter. In a contract year for Polanco, you would think he would perform better. Plus Cabrera's power number our down, especially extra base hits. He has I think 6 or 7 RBI's this month. That is crazy.

What's more shocking to me (--this is not a Leland rip because i think mixing and matching the 4A talent to keep them in first place this long is a minor miracle) is that we continue to be a station to station team when we struggle to score runs. I know we have roughly two talented base runners on the team but with the lack of mashers we have you'd think the bunt or something similarly effective in moving runners over would be nice. Didn't he make his name in the NL?

I think we should bunt more, but who is going to drive them in when we can't get a sac fly? He did manufacture a run with Polanco stealing and then Clete getting the single. I think he uses to many players too much. There is no way Josh Anderson should be starting on this team. Why not pinch hit for him in the 9th? In fact I forgot to mention the worst part of Detroit’s stats–the number of times they strike out with runner on 3rd less than 2 out, which is sort of the one thing you most DON’T want to do: 28 in 179 PA, or about 1 in 6 times. Some guys should be a bit ashamed here. INGE has only managed 4% of the team strikeouts. Detroit has now struck out 30 times in 182 PA. Cabrera has been the worst.

I just expect the bullpen to blow every game, then when they actually perform well I am pleasantly surprised. The offense has to improve drastically if they are going to have any shot down the stretch. Scoring runners that are on third with less than 2 outs is a good start.

It happens with shiity numbers like this. With a runner at 3rd less than 2 out the Tigers are at .283 .333 113 in BA OBP and Runs. We’re better than the fearsome Royals (.272 .322 97) but that’s it. League avg is .331 .379 130 to put that in context. If that’s not bad enough, Detroit is dead last in number of runner on 3rd less than 2 out situations. So we don’t get the runners there, and when we do, we are almost worst at getting them home. oh just to make it worse Cabrera has 0 sac flies this year. Laird leads the team with 3 and pineapple has 2.

Seay just left a slider out over the plate for Branyan. That was the difference in the game. Plain and simple. As a Mariners fan I was ecstatic especially with how well Felix pitched, but I was very impressed with Galarraga. It helps that the M's are a predominately right-handed lineup with little to no plate discipline, but that's splitting hairs a little. He was on it tonight. Pulling him in that situation is the right choice 9 times out of 10 though.

Anderson should not be used as a starter over Ordonez. I agree with the decision to play Thomas and Raburn over him because both have out-performed him in terms of power, fielding ability, and baserunning. Anderson, however, is such a liability offensively that he shouldn't start unless there's no alternative.

Frankly I'll never blame the pitching in a game we lose and only give up two runs. If we give up two runs every game, that would ordinarily be enough to win any division hands down.
