OT-UMich classes

Submitted by PrincetonBlue on

I'm currently a junior in high school and am looking to dual-enroll in calculus III.  I'm looking at places like the local community colleges like Schoolcraft and Washtenaw, but I realized I forgot about the most obvious choice of all: Michigan.

Could anyone break down how the cost of classes go?  They say that the cost per credit hour is $661 and I'm not sure what that means.  And also, how well would math credits transfer into UMich from places like Schoolcraft and Washtenaw (Recently legislation that guaranteed transfer credits between Michigan colleges expired, and in the future I'd actually like to go to Michigan)?

Don't worry about admission because for dual enrollment it is different than actually being admitted into the school.

EDIT: In addition, if anyone could give me tips on what teachers to get or avoid that would be nice.

Math grad here,

If you're interested in math as a potential major then I suggest you take the honors sequence at Michigan, 195/196 I believe. It will introduce you to proofs and you will be much better off in the upper level courses with this solid foundation. However, this course is offered during the day and rather difficult so it might be best for you to delay until you are enrolled (if Michigan is where you want to study). The problem with taking Calc 3(or any college level math) for credit is that it prevents you from taking 195/196 for credit because you cannot receive credit for taking calculus twice, I could be wrong here so definitely speak with someone in the department.

If you're not interested in math then take it at WCC. Calc 3 isn't used often and you'll probably only need to understand multiple integrals, which isn't really that difficult. You'll save money and learn the same stuff. I took 255 and it was very applied and didn't really teach any theory, or at least from what I remember so unless you're interested in math then I would just do it on the cheap.

Good luck!

P.S. I took Calc 3 at a local university my senior year and then didn't bother transferring the credit
