OT: Thursday Night Sports Open Thread

Submitted by Moleskyn on October 7th, 2021 at 8:53 PM

Not a bad lineup for a Thursday:

  • USMNT vs. Jamaica (ESPN2)
  • Rams vs. Seahawks (Fox)
  • Rays vs. Red Sox (FS1)
  • Various CFB games

Personally, I'm flipping between the soccer game and the NFL game.

And no sooner did I save, and the US goes up 1-0!

Seemed it was inevitable. They've been putting pressure on the Jamaican back line all game.

Pepi seems like he's got a bright future!

I have absolutely nothing against Stafford. He's a good dude.

I'm just one of those fans that once you are with someone else, I don't maintain some loyalty towards them.

I don't blame people who do, but in this case with the trade, there's a direct conflict with rooting for him and wanting the Lions to get better quickly. If this trade never happened, sure, go ahead and win the SB and have a career year. I can't root for him now, because the better he plays, the more it hurts Detroit.

Their getting there but another year at least from even sniffing the playoffs. Yzerman is doing things right, it just takes a while to turn the roster over and replace all the talent through the draft.

It's looking like Lucas Raymond (4th overall pick in the 2020 draft) is going to make the team. If/when he does, he would join Larkin as the only teenagers to make the Wings in a long time. So even if they're losing games, they should be worth watching.

Wow, another goal for Pepi!

2-0

This kid just keeps putting himself in the right place at the right time. I think this is 3 goals in 2 international appearances. And he's only 18!

Jamaica doesn't seem particularly good, but Dest, McKennie, and Musah have done a good job finding good passes and possessing the ball for long stretches.

Lol these commentators have been merciless on the ref. I wasn't watching live when the fouls happened, but they definitely seemed like they warranted reds.

I saw the second one, missed the first.

From what I saw, I think it deserved red, but the only thing I'll say is that it wasn't a totally clear break. The defender was a little bit off to his side; it was not directly behind him.

He's getting crap because he's taking too long to make a decision- I guess that doesn't bother me.

My Sox took a hit tonight. Giolito should have been the starter, but it is what it is. In some random universe I could see Jamaica, Bo Sox should have it

Well, the analytics say to go for it on virtually every 4th down. That's why that high school coach out west never punts. However, the game isn't played on paper, or with complex math. It's played with simple math. I need 2 scores (fg and td), I likely have only 1 other possession left, and it doesn't matter which sequence the points come in. Analytics give probabilities, and there isn't enough difference between a 12% and 7% probability to take the more risky choice.

I am a die-hard Tigers fan, but I don’t get to see a lot of their games in Florida. I have followed the Rays pretty closely this year and they are for real. I was worried they peaked in August but they are playing great baseball right now. Can’t remember the last  time I saw someone straight-up steal home, that was pretty cool.
