OT: Something I miss from the Board....

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on

I kind of miss the Friday Night Lights chatter. I know Smash is running the sidelines for A&M but at least we had a Lila sighting season this season.

Personally, I'm becoming a big Vince fan. I could see him playing for Rodriguez one day. I'm liking some of these characters (although I wish they would develop a few more of the player characters other than Vince and Luke) and would be curious of the Lila versus Becky opinions from you all.

As I've said before, tis the season, not much Michigan stuff to talk about.

Don't worry, we'll never run out of material. There's a daily, and sometimes even TWICE daily bobblethon reminder thread.

One of these days when I'm feeling particularly pushy, I could see myself unloading a totally unwarranted meltdown on one of those threads. Any of the 20+ of them. It'll be entertainly disturbing at least.

What is wrong with a sincere thread asking people to bobble and try to earn $10,000 for the alumni scholarship fund? I see some pretty stupid threads on here, many of which don't even have anything to do with UofM or sports (e.g., "uh oh, I'm f%cked because a mosquito just sipped my coffee and is now flying around me with a caffeine rush" or "i'm drunk and don't know what food to order for delivery" or even this gem of a thread ). Have any of you ever heard of Twitter?

If you don't want to participate in the bobblethon, how hard is it to just skip over the bobblethon reminder threads based on the title? I thought we were all supposed to be Michigan supporters.

To me, it is worth taking 60 seconds a day to tap Charles Woodson's stupid virtual head. Trying to win $10,000 for the alumni scholarship fund certainly isn't something for which I am going to apologize. If you don't want to participate, fine, but please save the hate for OSU or MSU or ND or PSU -- or at least save it for someone who is not trying to do something positive for the University.

The early episodes this season were sappy gynoramma tear-fests. For about three episodes I fast forwarded through about 1/3 of each. It was as if they were writing for teenaged girl sleepovers exclusively. I really fucking hated it.

Anyhow, its getting better. More action. Vince is a good, rich character. Luke is also a not-overly cliched character (unlike Riggins). I like Becky, but I really hope they dont turn her pregnancy into some political BS (haven't seen tonight's episode yet). And it is a bit offensive that the one black girl looks about 92% white. I mean, really?

But I like the show.

I don't know if you're including "The Son" in "the early episodes" you don't like, but that was one of the best hours of TV that I've ever seen.  Zach Gilford (aka Matt Saracen) was phenomenal, especially the scene when he has (or tries to have) dinner with the Taylors.

Personally, I thought the season started out strong (if a little too on the nose at times) and has only gotten better.  Vince is definitely a good character, but I've been especially impressed with the new characters that aren't really front and center (e.g. Luke, Vernon).

That is exactly one of the episodes I hated. They did just about all they could to pull some emotion out of the viewer. Nothing understated at all. Just cheap pathos. And it offends my sensibilites as someone who as been through similar events. Give me the type of understated, more talented and realistic writing in the wire or six feet under over that melodramatic crap.

But, like I said, I like some of the characters, and I like some of the stories. I like that it, at times, gets back to football. And I like the shapely women especially.

Has anyone else noticed the blatant lack of continuity when it comes to the town of Dillon?

It seems to exist in some magical geographical vortex, and the size and landscape of the town seems to change constantly.  In the first season, it seemed like Dillon only had two restaurants (Applebee's, the Alamo Freeze), and by the current season the town is apparently large enough to support two seemingly pretty big high schools.  East Dillon seemed to materialize out of nowhere.

Not that it distracts from the quality of the show, just something that stuck out to me over the past few seasons.

If you've ever been to Odessa, TX, the home of Permian High School and the subject of Friday Night Lights for the unfamiliar, that's exactly how it feels.  The town supports two huge schools, but there is absolutely nothing there.

West Texas is terrifying.  I drove across country to San Diego, and I was seriously afraid I'd run out of gas on I-10 after Odessa/Midland.  I actually got off twice to get gas, but the gas stations were out of business.

I don't watch FNL but I have to mention that more than the geographical discontinuity, Gregg Easterbrook (TMQ on ESPN.com) constantly complains about the lack of football realism. He mentions all the time how games end on impossible runbacks or hail mary passes, and that games are left out from the beginning of the season until the end, comparing the length of the season in real life to the number of games shown on the show.

Does the lack of football realism distract/bother you watchers? Or is it just another thing you suspend belief for on a TV show probably not geared to hardcore football fans?

The football element actually isn't that big of a part of the show.  It's used to frame other story lines, primarily.  If there's a game included in an episode, it usually only takes up about the last 5 minutes or so.  I don't think it's distractingly unrealistic, but it is dramatized to be more exciting (and usually to mirror whatever other storyline is going on that episode).  I don't think it takes anything away from the show overall.

it played this fall for directv ppl on channel 101 ...

solid season even if landry seems to have never ending eligbility

really my secodn favorite season after the first ...

doesnt compare to the movie though which i think is one of the best high school sports movies ever made, no other movie captures the feelings of high school athletes during the season and espicially for kids in their sr year as every thing they've worked for is coming to an end .... i must have watched it atleast 5 or 6 times with a few teamates during my sr season a few yrs back, it just captured everything
