OT: Ryder Cup - Singles matches and conclusion / controversy

Submitted by Amazinblu on October 1st, 2023 at 7:43 AM
The final day of the Ryder Cup is underway. Yesterday, Cantlay came from behind to flip his four ball match against McIlroy which reduced the Euro lead from 7 to 5 points. There’s a bit of discussion / controversy regarding hats - wearing them or not, being paid to play, etc. There’s a lot of denial about whether this is an issue, who’s going hatless and why, etc… In order to win the Cup, the Euros must win four (4) of the twelve (12) available points in today’s matches. If you’re watching… enjoy…

The whole hat thing is dumb. If Cantalay didn’t want to play because he wasn’t getting paid, then don’t play. Let someone else take the spot. Also, they look absolutely ridiculous not wearing hats. Between this dumbfuckery and Hovland and Rahm being such beasts, I’m having a hard time not rooting for Europe. I feel bad for guys like Scottie, Speith, and Johnson.

The hat rumor came from one internet dweeb and makes no sense. Cantlay could/would have declined an invite if he didn't want to participate. I think the rest of the team likely didn't wear a hat on Sunday as a sign of solidarity (which might be silly, but whatever gets you fired up, I guess.)

As for feeling bad for Speith...why? He played terrible. Scheffler, who I typically like, also won 0 matches. Granted he played well against Rahm, but these two didn't exactly pave the way for an American victory.

Homa, on the other hand? Huge fan after watching him compete and get fired up.

If Cantley didn’t want to be there, you wouldn’t know it by his play. Dude has been clutch. Way better than zeros like Morikawa.

Reality of it is that no matter how bad everyone thinks this US team is, all they needed was an average result on Friday and they would be in position to win this. They just shit the bed so bad and Europe was on a heater. They are playing as well as anyone could have hoped today. They've done a great job coming back but they are probably going to come up a point or two short.

Yesterday, one player - Cantlay - went “hat-less”. Today, that number has increased - I recall seeing not only Cantlay without a hat, but also Justin Thomas and Xander Schauffle. In the interview after his match, Cantlay said “it was nothing and misunderstood”… which, I don’t believe for a moment.

Morikawa too. The incident with the caddie yesterday was absurd. Just such poor form by the caddie. Rory let them celebrate for a good enough time when Cantlay sank the putt and then went to line up his putt and the caddie wouldn’t get out of the way and was a huge asshole about it. Just so much pettiness and sideshows.

Totally agreed. I feel like I’m taking crazy pills as a lot of our American media (especially the Barstool types, but not just them) have tried to downplay Lacava’s behavior and treat it as part of the Ryder Cup experience, but it was downright shocking. To be clear: there’s zero problem with taking off your hat and waving it (just like Cantlay) to give it back to the crowd — that’s classic Ryder Cup banter and totally in the spirit of the tournament environment — and that’s how people are trying to paint it. But it was considerably more than that.

From the camera angles that came out, Patrick had moved off the green and Rory had started looking at the side profile read of his putt during a critical attempt to tie the match on the 18th green. Your only job as a caddy at that point is to get the heck out of the way — and you are certainly never supposed to engage in conduct to even remotely interfere with your opponent’s ability to play golf. But we can actually see Lacava remaining alone in the middle of the green and Rory asking Lacava to step out of the way so he can progress through his routine, and Joe not only doesn’t move but actually pauses when he’s asked to move, then takes several steps towards Rory and starts directing what look like agitated words at him, and then proceeds to stand behind Rory while he is behind his ball lining up his putt and starts chirping at Lowry from over Rory’s shoulder.

I appreciate and love watching me some Tiger every opportunity I get, and I’ve long appreciated Joe as a great caddy for him. But that behavior was simply trash and incredibly embarrassing for our team. And if a European caddie did something like that to Scottie or JT on the 18th green while they’re trying to save a match, I know I would be very heated.

US captain’s picks only got 6 points from a possible 20. Morikawa, Spieth, and Koepka were shoo ins for selection. Nobody was questioning them before and none of them showed up this week (Koepka beat a rookie today, big whoop). JT, Burns and Fowler are the questionable ones. Burns played well and maybe gets a point or half today if he’s playing anybody but Rory. I would have left JT home and brought DJ. But nobody that the US left home is a clear upgrade. Nobody likes Bryson so it’s a non starter. Not like he is a match play titan or anything either.

Players just didn’t show up. Europe only had one player struggle and that was a rookie captain’s pick, so no big deal. Rory, Rahm and Viktor (Europe’s three best) got 10.5 points between them. The guys that are supposed to be killers for the US didn’t come close to matching it.

JT and Burns were definitely questionable but Fowler has been playing some unbelievable golf of late and he’s played in many Ryder Cups so having that veteran/calming presence is helpful. In the end, I agree with you. Europe’s best played better than our best and Europe’s middle of the road played better than our middle of the road.

His Ryder Cup record was not good coming into this one. Played great the first half of the season. After he got his win, I believe his best finish was 16th at the Tour Championship (only 30 players in that event). I think it would have been a question mark if he’s left off, especially if JT or Burns still got in.

Weird Ryder Cup.  Tip of the hat to Victor Hovland and Jon Rahm for being such great players and class acts.  It's quite an event.  Just my humble opinion, not a fan of jeers in the crowd when players back off putts or the whole hat thing. Then again, fan decorum has not always been the best on either side of the pond for a long time.  Cantlay at least played clutch yesterday and today.  Personally like and respect a lot of players for both sides.  Oh well, back to what might just be a very special football season for Michigan.

if you like golf but don't watch it anymore it is a good thing to give some spare time.  it seems like a 30 for 30 or instant classic having taken a chance on it.  lots of interesting shit got stirred up and maybe it will be good for the game.
