In the second half of March alone, they'll have two road trips in which they stand a good chance of logging almost 5,000 miles or so of travel each, and then another stretch like that just a couple weeks later in April. It did not strike me just how brutal the compressed schedule plus only playing games in our own conference would be until I actually looked at this. As many feared, the Red Wings again get the short end of the stick by virtue of their conference placement.

Here's a question- does a shortened schedule packed with games favor the Wings?
Though not as old a team as they have been in the past, not sure if this is a blessing or a curse.

Probably not great for the Red Wings considering they have one of the worst travel schedules every year in the league. Dallas might be the team that struggles the most with it though.

This only in-conference schedule sucks for those of us who are members of the (mid)Western diaspora currently living on the East Coast.

Red Wings have it bad, but the Wild probably have it the worst. Closest team in divison is in Denver (2+ hour flight), all other teams in division are considerably farther away. With heavy proportion of divisonal play, travel will only exaggerate troubles they have gelling new FA's during shortened season. Good news for the rest of the western conference.

Too bad the Red Wings can't, for whatever reason, find a way to get moved to the Eastern Conference, which has been rumored and sought after for years. Would put us in a much better position travel-wise both this year during the short season and in other years, eliminating trips to the West Coast and Alberta/BC.
