OT - Penn State to announce D-1 Men's Hockey

Submitted by Srock on

I know we have discussed the rumors of this in the past, however it looks like the offical Penn State announcement will be tomorrow. A PSU Alum is giving between $80 - $90 Million to start a D-1 Hockey Program. http://www.uscho.com/news/id,18726/PennStateSettoFieldVarsityProgramSourcesSay.html

USCHO.COM's front page has several stories abotu this, included the possible start in 2014  - 2015 of Big Ten Hockey. I think this would be great!

You could play a home and away series vs. the other 5 Big Ten Hockey Teams (MSU, Wiscy, Minny, OSU, PSU and Michigan) and then you would also have several open dates to play non-conference games (maybe Ferris St, WMU, ND, Miami (NTM), etc).

What about 3 game series? Friday / Sat / Sun or Thur / Fri / Sat 3 games times home and away that's 15 confernce games. It will be interesting to see how this goes.

whats the situation at Illinois and Indiana regarding hockey, that could be 7 and 8, recruit North dakota and the notre dame and that would be one pretty powerful hockey conference

With all the rumors about Michigan adding lacrosse, and the Title IX and budget reasons often given for not doing it, this shows that an athletic director at a fiscally healthy department with good donor support can get it done.  As the new guy on the block who is still learning the ropes, I wonder if Brandon views this as a bit of an opportunity or validation to get that done.  And if he does, will it open the door for women's hockey to offset men's lacrosse for Title IX, or would Michigan add men's and women's lacrosse together?  Pure speculation, I know.   But certainly the Michigan lax team is at least as successful and ready as the PSU hockey team.  Plus, I'd like to see a women's ice hockey team at Michigan.

You may like to see a women's team, but apparently Red doesn't. A few years ago I asked the board why Michigan lacked a women's hockey program and the collective wisdom pointed to Red's opposition along with the Title X implications.
