OT: McCarty's two way contract.
You guys will have to enlighten me on how this works. I am not sure if the Red Wings actually pay McCarty or if the Griffins do. If G.R., then it is cool, let him play in the minors, and we'll recall him if needed. But if the Red Wings are actually shelling out the cash, then I think this move is stupid. I love Darren McCarty. He was the tough guy for our first three cup teams, but if giving him this money means having to offer Hossa a deal worth four mil. on average, which he will probably reject, then I think it's kind of silly. But, I got faith in Ken Holland, and Mike Illitch, and I know they'll get the job done regardless of who gets signed. What do you guys think?
I think a two-way contract means that a player gets paid their AHL wage if they play in an AHL game and an NHL wage if they play in an NHL game. This differs from a one-way contract in which a player gets paid their AHL wage even if they are called up to the NHL.
His salary does not count against the cap unless he plays for us. He won't play for us unless there are a lot of injuries. So, it doens't mean much.
Hossa isn't signing with us...
The salary cap is at 56.8 million this year, and the Red Wings are sitting at a little over 53 with many holes to fill.
I wouldn't be so certain about that.
According to what 97.1fm said yesterday, Holland and Hossa's agent have talked and they aren't anywhere close to a salary that would be cap friendly to the Wings. I think its a longshot at best that Hossa is back next season.
I won't be upset about that. He was fun to watch but its him vs. our bread and butter (re: depth). I'll choose what's gotten us to this place in the league over the past 15 years.
If he was honest about winning a Stanley Cup he better cut his salary. Where else could he sign and have a realistic shot at winning a championship?
Well, he could've signed a multi year deal with the Penguins last season and would've made around $8 million per year.
Big mistake to turn down that money to come to the Wings.
Who's to say they would have still won the Cup? The probably would have been without Guerin, who knows if they would have traded Whitney and gotten Kunitz. Lots of unknowns if Hossa would have resigned.
Besides, they wouldn't take him back now anyway, so that's moot as far as this season goes.
