OT: The Lions

Submitted by Jay on

I didn't think it was ever possible for an NFL team to go winless in salary cap era. I've now changed my mind. The Lions are, by far, the least talented team in the NFL. 0-16 is a very real possibility. Supposedly, the franchise has a bit of a cash flow problem right now, too (once thought to be impossible because of the enormous TV payout that every franchise receives) due to poor merchandise sales and problems selling the suites and higher priced tickets inside Ford Field. Congratulations, Millen. You've virtually destroyed an entire NFL franchise.

Honestly, if you care about the Lions, you deserve this.  If people had stopped going sooner maybe the franchise wouldn't blow nutz.  And it's not like the Lions were any good before Millen.

Eh, The Lions.  I'll tell you what, it makes me feel so much better about my love for Michigan and the pain that is the 2008 team.  I'll never buy a Lion ticket.  Ever.  They are a disgrace to the word "football".

It's not surprising that they are having $$ problems.  When you go year after year after year of signing top-10 picks that's what happens.  Especially when your draft record is as awful as theirs is.  Those guys that are drafted in the first 4 rounds should have some shot of starting.  The Lions picks NEVER ever amount to anything.  Look at the last draft, what did they accomplish?

They traded up to take a tackle no one wanted and is also a 'project'.  Because the Lions need lineman that are projects.  Seriously they took this guy 15 spots after Jake Long went off the board.  Jake Long is 1000000 spots better than that guy.

At least he's playing.  The tackle the Bears took in the first round had back problems in college and lo and behold, he went down in training camp with a back injury.  Their 3rd rounder is a receiver who has been inactive most games, despite the Bears receiving corps being considered one of if not the worst in the NFL coming into the year (an old castoff from MIAMI of all teams, a malcontent who couldn't crack the Redskins lineup, a kick returner who had never played receiver full time and really hadn't played it period until last year, a glorified special teamer who isn't very good at catching the ball, etc).

Good thing for Angelo that their 2nd round pick grabbed the starting job and that the team has started out well (two blown leads in the 4th from being 5-0), or he'd be getting absolutely killed here for yet another bad draft (last year's 2nd and 3rd rounders were cut this preseason, for example).

They traded down for Cherilus actually.  Which was stupid because they could have had Branden Albert at the pick they traded out of, who is a whole round better than Cherilus.  'Course, he blew out his knee, but that wasn't a preordained thing.

I'll tell ya this: at some point in the near or distant future, the Lions will make the playoffs.  Whenever that happens, no more than three or four current Lions will be on the team.  The rest will be filling practice squads somewhere.  This bunch is the least talented gathering of football players ever seen in an NFL locker room.  Especially the defense.

I can't remember the last time I sat down to watch a Lions game. They are frustrating to watch. It isn't like they even keep up with the ebb and flow of NFL teams successes... they ALWAYS suck, every year, which is almost hard to do. If you draft in the top 5 picks for 3 or 4 years in a row, how do you fuck that up? I wouldn't think it was even possible. The odds have to be crazy to be that bad with that amount of high draft picks. It is insane. I guess I am still a fan. i want to see them succeed, but I really just don't know if it is possible. 1 play-off win in 50 years is insane. I mean really think about that. 1 win in 50 years. crazy.

The problem is that they've BEEN drafting in the top five the past couple years.  They've been picking up bums and tying up millions into them.  You build a team by trading down and getting more picks.  If they had any brains at all, their first four picks this coming draft would be all lineman - two on offense, two on defense.  The problem is, they are going to have the number one pick this year, absolutely no doubt about it, and only shitty teams are going to trade up with them, so they're still going to have pay assloads of guaranteed money to whoever they sign.  This whole organization is absolutely fucked, from top to bottom.  It's comical.

And it's not like the Lions were any good before Millen.

At least they were medicore and not the laughingstock of the leauge. The Lions were good for around 9-7 every year with an occasional wild card playoff loss.

In the ten seasons before Millen (1991-2000 ) The lions had 6 playoff apperances and if you added up their 3 best seasons they had 32 wins combined - since Millen took over this team has won 31 games total.

He turned a 9-7 team that was in the playoff race into a 2-14 mess.

Millen was brought in to turn around a team and he certainly accomplished his goal.

As bad as things are in St Louis and Oakland right now, the Lions are still the most rediculed franchise.

0-16 really is within reach this year - the only team left on the schedule that have a chance at beating is the Texans.  Best case scenario this team goes 1-15.  This is the worst NFL team I have ever seen.
