OT: LA Rams QB comparison leading to super bowl

Submitted by LloydCarnac on February 15th, 2022 at 8:44 AM

Found this non pay-walled analysis of LA Rams QBs Goff and Stafford play to be insightful: https://www.nfl.com/news/matthew-stafford-over-jared-goff-will-los-angeles-rams-qb-gamble-pay-off-with-lo

A look at some advanced metrics foreshadow some reasons for Stafford's super bowl success, and give insight to differences of 2 former 1st-round NFL draft picks.

Thanks for posting this. I do think the type of analysis in the linked article if superior to the "feelingsball" approach taken by many a pundit, however the author tries to make a point that I think is fairly suspect. He is essentially saying that the metrics don't show Stafford to be that much better than Goff in the regular season, however, the postseason is different and when looking at just the playoff metrics Stafford is superior. While the #'s don't lie, the sample size is just far too small to draw any meaningful conclusions from -  it's a comparison of Stafford's 2021 3-games vs. Goff's 2018 3 games.

I thought an interesting point in the article addressed the success of the run game during Goff's Rams tenure. Goff's QB success declined as the run game faltered or was limited. In contrast, when the run game was absent, Stafford was able to excel and lead the team while relying on his arm. This occurred during the season, playoffs, and Super Bowl.

Stafford's stats for the year are impressive, ranking with the best QB performances in the league for the year https://www.lineups.com/nfl/quarterback-qb-stats , resulting in his being the QB wearing "the ring," the most impressive stat of all.

Here's the insanity from that article:

Goff's time-to-throw was HALF A SECOND SLOWER when he was being blitzed.

All else being equal...do you think that a Lions QB or a Rams QB is going to be pressured more? Trading Stafford to get Goff was a doozy of a headscratcher.

I posted yesterday how I watched a couple Rams games after the Pats ate their lunch in the Super Bowl, and Goff always seemed a tick slow (usually while receivers ran wide open or open windows closed). Like he didn't quite know what he was looking at.

It was a very familiar look, and I bet DPJ has nightmares where he's running on an open field straight toward the endzone, looks for the ball, and all of sudden the whistle blows and the stadium announcer blurts out the familiar phrase "Patterson's pass is incomplete." He looks around, confused. The nearest defender is 10 yards away...and the ball is 10 yards further than that, bouncing harmlessly on the turf...

I'm confused by your point of trading Stafford to get Goff as being what that trade was about.

Stafford wanted out and the Lions were ready to start a real rebuild. The Rams gave up an additional 1st round pick to unload Goff and his contract in the trade. No one was trying to get Goff.

I don't know how fair it is to compare a QB in his third season (year Goff made SB) with one in his 13th season (year Stafford made SB)

Also, I imagine it's a vastly different experience playing against Zac Taylor and the Bengals in the SB and Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
