OT: Heading to Oregon @ Stanford Game

Submitted by M Wolve on

Hi MGoFriends,

Some other M fans and I will be in San Francisco this weekend, and we're thinking about heading to the Oregon @ Stanford game. The game starts at 7:30 EST, so it shouldn't be a problem catching the UM game at a nearby bar/tailgate and then heading to the game. Anyone have advice on acquiring tickets (scalp vs buy online before), tailgating, bars, places to see on campus, or anything out there?

We'll be out there for a week so we'll have plenty of time to explore SF itself. I've heard that Palo Alto isn't the most happenin of places, but heading to a game seems like a good time nonetheless. Much appreciated in advance.

Very different than the game experience in Ann Arbor.  Very laid back.  Parking near the stadium is easy.  Make some time before the game to check out the campus and Palo Alto.  If time permits, drive up to Alice's Restaurant up on Skyline for a meal before the game.

Have fun. No advice from me... But when I win a megamillions jackpot, I'm quitting my job and will spend about 5 straight years going to a home game at every FBS school. Between weekday games and different kick times on Saturdays, I think there would be many weeks where I could see 5 games. Anyone is welcome to join. Pay your own way.

The tailgating scene is a lot of fun and in a very picturesque spot among the trees right next to the stadium on campus. It'll be hopping for the Oregon game. Give yourself some time to explore campus too--worth the visit to the main quad and Memorial Chapel. You might consider riding Caltrain down if you're staying in SF. There's a special stadium stop for game days, and you can pregame on the train. Palo Alto is far more laid back than Ann Arbor on gamedays--half the people you'll run into won't even know there's a game.

I'm a PhD student at Stanford currently preparing to transfer back to UM to finish up there because, well, Stanford's not that awesome of a place to be honest. As far as the game goes, tailgating is limited and is largely concentrated to parking lots directly surrounding the stadium. Frankly, the scene is extremely weak compared to Ann Arbor. With regard to tickets, the enthusiasm surrounding Stanford football is underwhelming, and I really don't think they'd be that expensive, buying scalped or online. As far as bars go, the Rose and Crown, Nut House, or Nola are really the only ones worth considering. To be honest, you'd be better off spending as much time as you can in SF to just come down for the actual game. Again, I'm probably not the best person to give unbiased advice given my sour attitude towards the university, but that's my insight.

different.  Each have their own qualities.

The Michigan game day experience is definately more intense.  At Stanford (and in the Pac-12 in general) the games are fun, but not taken as seriously as in Ann Arbor.

Still, taking in a game at Stanford can be a great day.  The campus is very nice (but very different than Michigan).  The tailgating area surrounding the stadium is great.

Another great place to see a game is at Cal-Berkely.  Memorial stadium is an incredible venue.  Again, however, the vibe is far less intense than at Michigan Stadium.  Still a great place to see a game.  Just a different sort of thing than in Ann Arbor.

You could catch the Michigan game at the Old Pro in Palo Alto. Palo Alto has a pretty tame game day vibe, but you are cutting it pretty close to try to catch the game at the Michigan bar in the City (which is fun but in the Outer Richmond, and will not be bouncing for the Indiana game), or in the Marina (where there is more college football buzz due to high concentration of recent grads and, I am sorry to say it, douche bags).

Also, you shold consider there are likely to be more than a few Ducks in town, as they travel well, and they are likely to be at the Old Pro, or other bars, getting tuned up. Could be liver than usual.

My $0.02 is that you should go to Palo Alto. You can go to SF any time, and get the same fun experience. To go to Palo Alto on a gameday is something you'll not have the chance to do too many times, I wouldn't think.

Here are some recommendations if you haven't already seen them:

* Muir Woods

* deYoung Museum in Golden Gate Park (which has plenty of other nice spots)

* Berkeley (as someone else here noted ... campus and town are worth seeing)

* South of the city, a CCW loop down Highway 1 to Half Moon Bay, 92 across to 280, back north to the city. Good scenery, short trip ...
