OT: Gruden signs extension with ESPN
While we all know that contracts mean nothing in sports, this is interesting if nothing else. I bet he stays with ESPN until he can get a good NFL coaching job.
"Working with Mike, [Ron Jaworski] and our entire Monday Night Football team is the most fun I have had in years, and I am fired up to make this long-term commitment to ESPN," Gruden said in a statement. "Monday Night Football is special and I look forward to remaining a part of it and continuing to call these great games."http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4659441&campaign=rss&source…

An NFL football announcer is not a bad gig for a retired player or coach. Your still involved with the game albeit on the outside looking in, but hanging out will like minds talking about a game you have a passion for, all while getting paid.
Plus its a bit tougher to get an entire fanbase to call for your head in that position.

I would think it would be a cushy job too, but it still has to be tough watching other coaches make decisions you would make differently and not be able to act. Like a hurt player not being able to get in a game and help out.
edit: Irish, if Charlie does go, who do you want to see take his place?

Does he enjoy sailing?

Smartest thing he's done. A tenth of the time in preperation at half his coaching salary.

I really like Gruden on Monday Night Football. After the past two mistakes I think they have done a really good job at finding some balance on the show with Terico (sp?) keeping things moving and Jaws and Chucky going back and forth all game. It has been a lot more pleasant to watch MNF this year.

he's brought a fantastic perspective to the broadcast along with his great old videos of practice, etc. Hoping he actually stays

...I was hoping he would end up at ND. The circus and the eventual deterioration of their program would be fun to watch. Gruden is the worst handler of QB's I have ever seen. He is so bad that he could turn Jimmah into a happy-footed fourth-rounder.
He really would be better served to stay in the booth and become a beloved figure, though. I'll be entertainied either way.
