OT: Former Michigan players in Dexter

Submitted by Sgt. Wolverine on
After jamiemac's talk of Antoine Joubert in his post about the 1987 Michigan-Purdue basketball game, I couldn't help but notice his name in this article: http://www.dexterleader.com/stories/022609/spo_20090226020.shtml In short, former Michigan athletes are playing basketball against Dexter teachers, coaches and administrators in a fundraiser for Dexter athletic programs. The game is tonight at 7:00 at the DHS gym; admission is $5. Dexter will probably lose badly, but hey, it's a fundraiser. (I'll be there shooting pictures for the local newspaper.)

Bill Frieder should have been fired for his gross mishandling of Antoine Joubert. When Joubert was a senior in HS, his district and region were at EMU, in whatever the name of the old barn was. Counting playoff games and the regular season against Ypsi, I think I saw "The Judge" about four or five times. I watched him dump in over forty a few times, including 48 in a championship game in which his team was horribly overmatched. Joubert's natural shot was about two steps over center court. He could stroke it in all night. Imagine my surprise when he got to UM, and Frieder wouldn't let him shoot from there. I saw him play a lot at Crisler, and at least ten times a game, he would start to take a shot, get the "coach is gonna yell at me if I take this one" look on his face, put the ball on the floor, drive a few steps closer to the hoop, and lay a brick. In the Purdue game, it looked like he was just taking his natural shots, and (imagine that) they went in. After that game, I was thoroughly pissed thinking about how great a career he would have had if Frieder had just let him shoot the ball when he wanted to. What a waste of a great kid. It is no accident that it took Steve Fisher to lead Frieder's team to the NCAA Championship. Or that Frieder hasn't sniffed one since.
