Marked OT Because not harbaugh
December 22nd, 2014 at 3:51 PM ^
The Fighting Harbaughs will be number 1 in 2015.

He's going to Notre Dame?
December 22nd, 2014 at 3:52 PM ^
I'm surprised OSU is 9th. I would expect them to be higher. Also, a little surprised that MSU makes the top 20

Not sure how forbes calculated the numbers, but OSU and USC don't report merchandise sales.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:14 PM ^
Or tattoo expenses.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^
Interesting. I didn't know that. I was also wondering how this is calculated. I would have to imagine that OSU would be top 5 if they reported merchandise sales.

Once pure number of fans is taken into account (clearly we have a boatload of alumni, which helps), a major factor is how much disposable income those fans have to pump into their fandom. Not sure if numbers back this up, but I'd expect that Notre Dame, UT and UM alumni and fans tend to do pretty well for themselves, at least relative to OSU fans.

Buckeye brand chewing tobacco and they are #1

Infinity dollars per football win.

This can't be correct. Don't you know Michigan is irrelevant these days?

Program can't even iPad, bro.

Let alone can't afford to lease a plane....

Good snark, WichitanWolverine. Now my comment will have to be more serious. It seems like a lot of people in the South see Michigan as "irrlevant." Not only does this rating debunk the theory of Michigan's "irrelevance," but so does the fact that the Michigan coaching search is a national story and has been one since it started.
Imagine how "relevant" this program is going to be when Jim Harbaugh takes it where it belongs: the top.

It doesn't surprise me with how Dave Brandon ran the program. Charge more and more for tickets, I don't know if concessions increased, and don't give away anything more than you absolutely have to.

not OT
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:01 PM ^
If it ain't CC, it must be OT.
December 22nd, 2014 at 3:59 PM ^
and the University of Washington is even higher?
and I agree, #9 for OSU seems a little low (below Tennessee?)
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:12 PM ^
There were almost no pro sports in Seattle until the late 70's. So UW football was about the only game in town. Then the Don James era happened.
Until Rick Neuweisel left the team a mess 10 years ago, and the Seahawks surged, the Huskies were incredibly popular not only in Seattle but the region.
They fell on hard times and have pinned their hopes to Chis Petersen who has a 100-17 record in 9 seasons between Boise St. and UW.
Anyway, having lived in Seattle for 13 years and witnessing the commitment most die-hard fans and alum have to their football program, I wasn't surprised to see them on this list.

i love using this type of info to counter those who say the UM head coaching job isn't what it used to be.

Give it all to Harbawwww
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:11 PM ^
70% margin, eh? Hell of a conversion.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:36 PM ^
Um, expect that to go down just a wee bit if we bring in Jim Harbaugh.
December 22nd, 2014 at 4:17 PM ^
Surprised that Ohio is so low. I can see USC because they never fill their stadium. Washington lol

MGoPoints. We win, we win!
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:11 PM ^
I wonder if they track the MGoPoint supply. Some of the -1000000 point nukings should have done some serious damage.

I see you're missing some info. I'll go ahead and fill it out correctly.

Bring in Harb, become #1!
December 22nd, 2014 at 5:34 PM ^
Paying $8 million to the CEO of a $117+ million (seems low considering the impact football has on apparel and licensing) organization is about right.
December 22nd, 2014 at 6:51 PM ^
UM has stayed top 5. The list is suspect though. I know for a fact Ohio State and USC are too low, and Wisconsin, which is missing, is a top 10 revenue team.
December 22nd, 2014 at 6:59 PM ^
Can someone help me understand how you value a football team?
