OT - European footy-ballers

Submitted by Bromigo on
One thing I would love to steal from Euro Soccer’s playbook is the chants and songs. Within our well traveled sporting blogosphere surely some of you have been to a European match. They have chants for when they win, lose, at individuals, refs, coaches, and it is awesome. Portsmouth has one of my favorites (even though they will be relegated this year) as it is simple and direct. See link: http://www.fanchants.com/football-songs/portsmouth-chants/play-up-pompe… The only thing I have ever heard is, “It’s a great day to be a Michigan Wolverine” in the parking lot after a W. Anyone heard/know of any in game songs or chants we have?

Having chants over the game, given how football is played in brief spurts, would be stupid. The chants in soccer matches go on because the majority of a soccer match is, frankly, boring and fans are keeping themselves occupied. And I'm a huge soccer guy. Sorry, but The Victors and the football game itself is enough for me.

IMO - Football is more prone to support a song or chant because it is not continuously played. There are TV stoppages that drag on and on, measurements, video replays... It would be nice to have something to keep energy levels up that was unique to Michigan. AKA – NOT canned music.

I don't know who can honestly say that they are a fan of soccer but find most of the game boring. Unlike football, hockey, baseball, basketball etc there is no lapse in the gameplay in soccer. I know that it isn't always intense throughout the entire 90 minutes, but I would think football would be much better able to support chants and songs with all the breaks inn the action.

...and tell me that 100,000+ singing a supporters song while we're on defense wouldn't have an effect. Supporters songs are superior to yelling once the opponent breaks the huddle because the noise is constant and loud, very loud. You can even turn on an MLS game and see how cool an atmosphere this creates. DC United, Seattle Sounders and Toronto FC are probably the best examples.

I heard an interesting BBC report about Portsmouth and their struggles following a series of out of town owners. The interviews made it seem like many fans didn't mind being relegated because they'd be able to afford to attend games. Go to Yost for a hockey game, there are plenty of chants there. Also, at football games, there are songs (Victors, Varsity, Yellow and Blue, Temptation, etc) and chants (Let's Go Blue, Go Blue, the cowbell clap). College football is a lot like toned down major European football.

Perhaps it is time to tone it up. Seriously, there is nothing like being at an EPL game live. I was Manchester England for a medical conference a couple years ago and got the chance to go to the Manchester derby between city and united at Old Trafford and it was insane. If the Big House got its fans making that kind of noise when the opposition was on offense there would be no way they could hear anything. It would be amazing.
