I don't remember social media scorching him as much as the Tigers organization treating him like shit after demanding he give the ball to Pujols or they wouldn't verify it as the 2000th rbi ball. The Tigers were the ones that looked bad IMO.

I'm sure that there were plenty of anonymous internet tough guys on social media judging him for keeping the ball. It's not hard to imagine the accusations: selfish, attention-seeking, etc. These people, who are usually not the representative of the majority, never seem to stop and think for a second about what or why someone did what they did, in this case, kept a caught HR ball. For some reason, they know exactly what everyone should do in any circumstance, and are not afraid to share it on Facebook or Twitter.

Pujols seemed to come out of it looking the best, he basically said "we play for the fans, they can do what they want with the balls they catch. I have plenty of milestone balls." The media seemed to be baiting him into calling out the fan.

You're right though that the Tigers screwed it up too. I heard that the team representatives who went down to negotiate for the ball were basically assholes, and that turned this guy off enough he decided to keep the ball out of spite.

It was mostly that, but this person also gave some very, very strange media interviews, including one where he quite awkwardly invoked Anne Frank for reasons that seemed logical to no one but him. Within a couple days he had told the rest of the story, but it was not handled well by anyone for first day or so.

The reports of the Tigers being assholes came from him, though.  I don't think he came out of it smelling like roses.  I didn't get the impression it was "give it here or we won't verify it."  It seemed more like "we can't verify it, so you'll walk out of here with a worthless ball if you keep it."  MLB won't verify it unless they see the guy actually catch it, rather than fish it out from underneath the seats which is what this guy did.  I don't know what the demeanor of the Tigers' reps was, but he kind of trashed them in a way that didn't come off completely honest.

Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. The game was on TV and they interviewed the guy right after he caught the ball. He said on live TV what the Tigers rep was demanding he do, and what they offered him to do it. The next day the Detnews verified his story. They offered him autographed memorabilia for the ball and he said he didn't know what he wanted to do at that time. At that point they threatened to not authenticate the baseball if he didn't give it to Pujols.

Thanks for posting this encouraging story.

It is rather unique to see a post on MGOBLOG right now that is not laced with negativity...

The Tigers added one more error (and Gibby was trying to snare it too?) to their awful resume....

Hail to Cy!

Go Blue!

Oh my God...And his son was named after Cy Young! I'm not a parent, so I can't begin to imagine what it's like to lose a child. Huge props to this man and may his daughter bring him much joy.

I was at that game, sitting very close to the man that ended up with that baseball. I was close enough to overhear a lot of what was said by the Tiger's representatives, and also some of what the man said, though he was very soft-spoken & so I only got bits of his remarks. I can say he was not mistreated nor was he 'talked down to' by the Tigers folks. The Tigers reps were frustrated by his initial 'no comment' approach, and so they did try to explain (several times) the significance of getting the baseball 'officially verified' (or whatever it's called) by the MLB. The man was simply quiet about the whole thing, and he was a little bit camera shy too.
