OT: Coaches adept at bringing attention to themselves and their teams, that you would enjoy coaching your favorite team?

Submitted by Cro-magnon on
Jim Harbaugh is clearly a master at being interesting. Who are some other coaches with this knack? Dick Vitale was a master of this when coach of UofD. Steve Spurrier, Bob Knight, Bill Parcells, Billy Tubbs, are all interesting characters, self promoters, but none can come close to matching Jim Harbaugh. Who are some others? Thanks for your input.

If Craig James hadn't allegedly killed 5 hookers causing his son to have a mental breakdown. Leach could have been our coach instead of Rich Rod.

Because he doesn't bring attention to himself, but I would give anything for Brad Stevens to be coaching the Cavs, and I am insanely jealous of the Celtics because of it.

In terms of baseball managers,
joe maddon gets a lot of attention. The baseball world is different but I think he has been edgy relative to his peers. He will speak his mind and his hipster glasses give a renegade edginess.

I would think that playing under Sparky Anderson would have been interesting, if nothing else. There are numerous accounts, for example, of how hard he took losses and not so much in an unbecoming way, just that he would be very silent and visibly upset. I know Ernie Harwell used to walk the stadium with him and he would talk about how Sparky was a totally different person if the Tigers had won the night / day before as opposed to when they lost. I can only imagine then what 1989 was like on the inside for him when it was bad enough on the outside looking at the play that year.

Wolverine Devotee.

Oops, I only read the "adept at bringing attention to themselves."

Seriously, dude, your contributions are very much entering diminishing marginal returns territory. Rule of thumb: if you're wondering whether you should post it or not, don't. Too much posting for way too little added value.

Urban Meyer I feel is good at this. I mean he couldn't handle a year out of college footabll so he took up a job at ESPN. I feel it was so people couldn't forget about him.

He was not good. Unfortunately, they also made him the GM. He was Matt Millen level bad at that. He was good in CBB, though.

Billy Martin was entertaining as a baseball manager, albeit wih a short shelf life. Ditka or Buddy Ryan would have been fun in the NFL. I loved Bo, but Woody would have been great too. Spurrier in his prime, especially in this social media age, could be great too.

I think I'd enjoy Mark Cuban owning my team, wouldn't matter which pro sport or who was coaching.

Stole my thunder with Earl Weaver.  Best baseball argument performer I have ever seen.  There have been some better tirades here and there by guys, but Earl brought it every time.  My favorite move was his turning his lid around so he could get more in the face of the offending umpire.  I am a lifelong Tiger fan but would watch the Orioles whenever possible on the chance that Earl would blow a gasket.  Awesome stuff.
