OT: Classic Series: 1998 Stanley Cup Final - Red Wings vs. Capitals NHL Network Tonight
Tonight the NHL Network has on it's "classic series" and tonight's listing is the 1998 Stanley Cup Finals which ended up being Detroit's first back to back championhsip since 1954-1955. This series really brings back memories because it was the first Stanley Cup chamionship that I ever watched Detroit play in and I can remember being so excited when they won it that year. I still tear up when I see Steve Yzerman, Shanahan and McCarty place it on Konstantinov's lap as they wheeled him around the ice with it and the fans inside Washington's arena cheering as he goes by. That series was something special and definitely is in my top 5. If you don't get NHL Network there's always youtube. Wingsfights always posts the classics and some new ones up.
Thanks for the heads up. That was a strong and entertaining Wings team for sure although I prefer the previous year as Konstantinov was still playing.
I didn't ever get to watch this one, I was working nights at the time and could listen on the radio only, during certain parts of it.
:( God damn Esa Tikkanen...
I still vividly recall that play to this day, what a difference maker it ended up being. To hear Ron Wilson call out Esa in the postgame... you knew the series was over.
Dale Hunter... the man who used Steve Yzerman as a chair. A chair that took a slashing penalty for being sat on. I'll never forget that. NO ONE SITS ON OUR CAPTAIN! I said at the time.
Game 2 of this series is still the most exciting Stanley Cup Final game ever played in my opinion.
