OT: Anyone watching Mad Men? Open Thread

Submitted by Yostbound and Down on

I know the counterprogramming is especially strong Sunday nights, but has anyone else been keeping up with Mad Men this last season? Series finale is next weekend, and these last few episodes have had some pretty interesting developments (albeit amidst some dullness).

So what do you think of the season so far? Spoilers potentially below:

Thought tonight's episode was pretty interesting, confronting Don with his past and also reuniting Pete with Trudy. That asshole Duck showed up again too.

1. Pete should know better than to trust Duck at his word when Duck's off the wagon.

2. Don is DB Cooper?

3. The show making me feel sorry for Betty makes me uncomfortable. She's terrible. But I can't help but feel the heartstrings tugging here.

I've enjoyed this half-season. Even though everything is going Campbell's way.

I think next week's episode is going to be great, but I doubt it will cleanly wrap things up. I expect to be utterly left hanging, wondering what everybody's future is going to be. I happen to like that style, but I suspect lots of folks are going to be displeased.

"I know cooler heads should prevail, but am I the only one who wants to see this?"

Really, I was just waiting for Trudy to cold-cock him in the face. Because if there's one thing this show always does right, it's Pete Campbell getting punched in the face.

..."happy endings" or closure with anything, but it seems equally off to have almost every character end in a painful place, which is where I think Mad Men is headed.

Honestly I do think we're seeing closure, although not happy endings. It all comes down to Don, but other than Peggy, Sally and Roger everyone else seems to have loose ends tied up right now. Joan lost, but getting out of such a poisonous environment has to be worth something. Betty is dying, Cooper is dead. Pete seems to be reconciled with himself and Trudy and starting over (if it's real, which I think everyone would assume if we didn't see them again).

If the finale shows Roger on a yacht with an eighteen year old model, Peggy reassert herself in a big way and Sally showing sings of becoming her own woman, I'd say those storylines all resolved themselves pretty well.

Then we're left with the one everyone will remember. I'm reasonably sure Don is either going to actually die or that "Donald Draper" will figuratively die in a fairly obvious way.

The episode made me uncomfortable at times and that's why the show is great.

I thought it was all over for Don in a hotel room in Oklahoma.

I have a feeling I'll be quite sad this time next week

I believe Don will come back to NYC. He mentioned to Sally that he would call her 'next week,' which would roughly be the time he is at in the show after leaving the motel. He'll call her and find out about Betty, realize he will now have to young sons to take care of, and go back to work.

Don won't die. He won't ride off the edge of the Grand Canyon (unless he gets a new one). He will not become DB Cooper and jump out a plane. He will be confronted with Betty being terminal and his children will really need him. I think it will be a painfully honest look at life. The last part of his idenity remaining is the fact that he is a dad and now will now have to take care of his kids.

That, and Rodger will be on a boat, like JGB stated above.
